Chock full coffeehouse coming soon

By MICHAEL BOYLAN

Always offering an eclectic mix of local and regional performers, the next Stars on the Southern Crescent coffeehouse, scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 26, may be the biggest and brightest one yet.

The coffeehouse is chock full of entertainment from storytellers and folk musicians to sketch comedy from some up-and-coming local comedians.

The storytellers that will be present at the coffee house are Tersi Bendiburg and Sarah Monsour. Bendiburg is a Cuban-born storyteller whose tales draw on memories of Cuba and the myths and legends of several cultures. She has performed at the coffee house several times and is well known on the story-telling circuit.

Bendiburg brings a relative newcomer with her in Sarah Monsour. Monsour will entertain the audience with stories of growing up in a small Southern town as well as stories based on her extensive travels.

The musical portion of the evening will be provided by Ensemble pour deux, which consists of Kaylynn Davis playing harp and Barbara Hood, who has previously performed vocally and on piano at Stars, playing violin and viola. Ensemble pur deux boasts a broad and eclectic repertory, focusing on folk music and more. The group is well known and respected locally, performing at a number of events in the spring and summer.

As for the comedy, Mike Boylan brings his comedy troupe, Creatures of Habit, and their wild style of humor to the stage. Made up of himself, several local high school students and his stepbrother, Creatures of Habit has begun to build a following around town. They will perform the “Fifteen Minutes of Fame Spectacular” at the coffeehouse as a warm up for a very busy spring season.

The Stars on the Southern Crescent Coffeehouse will be presented Saturday, Feb. 26 at National Heights Baptist Church. The doors will open at 7:45 p.m. and the show will begin at 8:15 p.m. Admission is $6 for the general public and $4 for seniors and children under 12.

A variety of desserts and hot and cold drinks will be available. Patrons who bring mugs from home receive discounts on beverages and compete for the “Most Unusual Mug” award. For information, phone 770-631-2362 or e-mail to offshootpr@aol.com
