Postseason
extends season for some By MICHAEL
BOYLAN The regional basketball tournaments have begun. The season ended in the first round for some, while others will undoubtedly see themselves in the state tournament next week. The Sandy Creek Lady Patriots, the McIntosh Chiefs, and the Starr's Mill Panthers all lost in the first round of their respective tournaments, while their counterparts have found ways to survive. The Starr's Mill Lady Panthers defeated the Lady Patriots 52-47, mere days after beating them at the end of the regular season. Starr's Mill won all three meetings between the two teams this season. The Lady Patriots built an early lead, but Amy Holloway and Jamie Vining hit some key three pointers to get the Lady Panthers back into the game. Starr's Mill controlled the tempo for the rest of the game, but Sandy Creek cut the lead to two points with just under a minute to go. Starr's Mill outlasted Sandy Creek, playing some good defense and making key shots. Maya Hughes led Sandy Creek in scoring with 18 points. Jamie Vining netted nine points for the Lady Panthers. The Sandy Creek boys opened the tournament with a win as well, defeating Forest Park 67-50. L. T. Lockett came out on fire, scoring 15 of his game high 21 points in the first half. The Patriots built a lead and refused to relinguish it, despite several surges from Forest Park. Jermaine Harris added 14 points for Sandy Creek. Though they almost came back to win it, the Starr's Mill boys lost to Woodward Academy in the first round. The Panthers led 13-11 after the first quarter, but found themselves down by 14 at the half. Much like the final game of the season against Sandy Creek, Starr's Mill would have to bounce back from a large deficit to get the win. It appeared as if they would do it, as they cut the lead to seven points going into the final quarter. With one minute to go, the Panthers trailed by one point and then could not get closer. Woodward Academy outlasted Starr's Mill 60-56. Donny Lampen led the Panthers in scoring with 25 points, while Dane Davenport scored 14 points. The McIntosh boys basketball team lost in the first round as well. The Chiefs were narrowly defeated by LaGrange, 63-57. The Grangers led 31-27 at the half and McIntosh kept the game close, but LaGrange proved too much. Stephen Cox scored 17 points for the Chiefs while Josh Burr added 11 points. The McIntosh Lady Chiefs won their first game of the region tournament by defeating Carver, Columbus, 64-38. The Lady Chiefs came out and played one of the best first halfs in recent memory, leading 37-17 at the half. Jessi Prahl, Melanie Schneider and Megan Bartels each scored 12 points in the win. Prahl also pulled down 10 rebounds. The win guaranteed a slot in the state tournament for McIntosh, as the top four finishers in each region will advance to the state tournament. |
