Panthers, Tigers win area championships

The region was wild with wrestling last weekend as Fayette County hosted the 4-AAAA area wrestling meet and Sandy Creek hosted the 4-AAA wrestling meet. The Tigers won their tournament with 212 total points, while Starr's Mill, the obvious favorite in 4-AAA, won the area meet with 258.5 points.

Fayette County produced three individual champions on their way to the area title; Jarrod Bailey (135), Justin lane (145) and Sam Norman (152). The Tigers will send 10 wrestlers to the state meet, while McIntosh, which placed third in the meet, will send nine wrestlers to the meet. The Chiefs produced three individual champions in the area meet; Ricky Smith (112), Eddie Smith (130) and Michael Lee (160). The AAAA state meet will be held Friday and Saturday at McEachern High School.

Starr's Mill qualified all 14 wrestlers for the state meet on Saturday, defeating Woodward Academy, which placed second overall at the area meet, by 35 points. The Panthers had seven individual champions in the meet; Gary James (103), Brian Kyser (125), Jason Kiefer (130), Ariston Bowers (140), Christopher Coleman (145) Drew Cofty (152) and Clint Barbour (215). James and Coleman will enter the state meet in Columbus still undefeated on the season. Sandy Creek placed fourth in the meet and qualified seven wrestlers for the state meet, including John Hilton (103), Matt Smith (119), Ryan Stanfield (130), Johnathan Calahan (215) and Singleton (125).

Landmark Christian School won their area meet over the weekend as well. The War Eagles scored 185 total points, while Northgate came in second with 151 points. Landmark qaulified 10 wrestlers for the state tournament to be held in Gainesville this weekend. The qualified wrestlers are Paul Muchnick, Justin Winter, Ben Everett, Wallace Duvall, Ben King, Michael Cox, Ray Ross, Ethan Everett, Jeremy Smith and Lee Smith. Muchnick, Winter, Everett and Duval were individual champions at the area meet.
