Starr's Mill and Sandy Creek split on Tuesday evening

The Sandy Creek Patriots did not have to travel far Tuesday evening to meet their county and region rivals, the Starr's Mill Panthers.

It's good that it's such a short trip. The two teams will probably see each other again in the same place in two weeks. Starr's Mill will be the site of the 4-AAA subregion tournament. If Tuesday's games are any indication, the matches will be very good.

The Lady Panthers defeated the Lady Patriots 63-38. Everybody on the Starr's Mill squad played and all but one member of the team scored. Jamie Vining led the team with 23 points. She hit seven three-pointers in the win, four of those coming in the first quarter.

“Those three pointers were big early on,” Coach Teresa Hobbs said. “That established a lead for us and we never gave it back.” The Lady Panthers played better than they had been playing. The team shot better, made fewer turnovers and came out with some much-needed energy.

Ashley Lott led Sandy Creek in scoring with 12 points.

The Starr's Mill boys team came out without energy and Sandy Creek took advantage. Getting good play from their guards, especially L.T. Lockett, who finished the evening with 34 points, the Patriots outrebounded and outplayed Starr's Mill. Donny Lampen led the Panthers in scoring with 15 points.

Starr's Mill will travel to face Forest Park Friday night and then will host the McIntosh Chiefs Saturday. Saturday's game also will be “Jimmy V Night.” The team is a sponsor for the Jimmy V Foundation and will use the evening's activities to raise money for the Foundation's programs.

Sandy Creek will host North Clayton Friday night, but because of a play being staged at Sandy Creek, the game will be played in the old Fayette County High School gym. Saturday, the Patriots will host the Fayette County Tigers at Sandy Creek.

McIntosh will spend the weekend on the road, as the team travels to face Lovejoy Friday and then travels down the road Saturday to meet the Starr's Mill Panthers. The Chiefs won both games at their home in December and both teams will be very up for the game.

In other McIntosh news, the Lady Chiefs lost their first subregion game Tuesday, as they fell to the East Coweta Lady Indians 62-49. East Coweta will host Carver-Columbus Friday.
