The four county wrestling teams stayed in the state this weekend, after an arduous week the week before. Starr's Mill traveled to the Dalton Carpet Classic, Fayette County wrestled at McEachern and Sandy Creek and McIntosh wrestled at McIntosh in the McIntosh Duals.

Starr's Mill won the Dalton Carpet Classic, beating out teams like Woodward Academy, Murray County and Morgan County, the top ranked team in AA. The team placed 12 out of 14 wrestlers and had two champions in the meet; Gary James (103) and Christopher Coleman (145). Both James and Coleman are undefeated on the season. The Panthers also had three runners-up; Ariston Bowers (140), Matt Fuhrmann (160) and Clint Barbour (215). Drew Cofty placed third at 152. Starr's Mill will host Lovejoy and Northgate Wednesday at 6 p.m. and then will host Stockbridge, Jackson and East Coweta Friday at 6 p.m.

Fayette County wrestled in the Southeastern Duals at McEachern Saturday and went 3-2 in the meet. The Tigers defeated Northside Warner-Robbins 51-27, Clay High School from Alabama 42-28, and Kincaid High School from Texas 45-23. Their two losses came against Redbank High School of Tennessee, 41-36, and Jackson High School from New Jersey, 44-21.

“We wrestled pretty well,” said Coach Jim Bailey. “It was a very competitive meet and if we had caught some breaks, we might have won more.” The Tigers placed seventh out of 12 teams. Two Fayette County wrestlers won all of their matches at the meet, Jarrod Bailey (135) and Nick Salters (160). Brad West (140) went 4-1. Fayette County will travel to Parkview Wednesday to face top ranked Parkview and Shiloh at 6 p.m. The Tigers will then host the Fayette County Duals Saturday at 10 a.m.

The Chiefs wrestled well in their meet, going 3-2 and improving to 7-9 on the year. They lost to Harrison High School 58-6, and then lost to McCallie, from Chattanooga, Tenn. 40-33. Ricky Smith was the only winner in the Harrison match. McIntosh did produce wins over Morrow 68-6 and East Coweta 72-15. They also were credited with a win due to Sandy Creek forfeiting after Kerry Ruffin was injured.

Ricky Smith was the only McIntosh wrestler to win all five matches. Eddie Smith, Ricky's older brother, lost to Michael Powell of Harrison in double overtime. The next time the two will potentially meet will be the state tournament. The Chiefs will travel to Hardaway for the Hardaway Invitational this Friday and Saturday. Sandy Creek has cancelled its matches for the rest of the week.
