you apply for a new car tag be sure to know the new rules Officials from Georgia's Clean Air Force announced this week that annual testing of vehicles for emissions begins this week. Vehicle owners will now be required to have their vehicles tested ever year, but residents who had their cars tested in 1999 won't have to have the car tested again until 2001. Also, newer vehicles from 1999 and 2000 are also exempt from the testing this year. Another change in the system is that vehicles will no longer have a window sticker applied to their cars. The original purpose of the sticker was to remind car owners when to have their vehicles tested again. Since annual inspections are now required, the sticker is no longer necessary, officials said. The testing system also allows for a repair waiver for a cars that fail to pass the inspection. But this year, the waiver was increased from $200 to $608. If you spend $608 and still can't pass the test, a repair waiver will be granted to allow you to purchase your car tag. More than 650 testing stations are located throughout the 13-county metro area. Vehicle owners with older vehicles-1975-1994-should take their cars to an “All Vehicles Welcome” station, while owners of newer vehicles should go to a “1995 and Newer Vehicles Welcome” station.
