Sharpshooters plan cleanup of Turin's Tranquil Cemetary

At the request of Turin Mayor W. Allen Smith, the Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp 1729, Sharpsburg Sharpshooters, will sponsor a cleanup of the Tranquil Cemetery.

The cemetery was first connected to a Methodist church in the 1820s. There are two Union soldiers buried here as well as a number of black grave sites.

There are approximately 20 black grave sites with headstones and as many as 200 sites without headstones.

The Sharpshooters will be cleaning this portion of the cemetery and invite anyone interested to come this Saturday, Jan. 15, at 9 a.m. to help out.

They will provide the tools necessary to clean the grave sites and the grave markers. “We would appreciate those in the area to come and help, whether you have ancestors buried here or not,” said camp Commander Edward J. Lanham.

The cemetery is on Tranquil Cemetery Road, just past Turin, traveling east about one mile on the road to a dirt road and then left into the cemetery. Signs will be posted along the way.
