When there is nothing to do: go skating

There is nothing like strapping on a pair of roller skates and hitting the glossy and smooth floor of the local roller rink. The music booms as people skate in their uneven orbits, colored lights flicker and laughter and good cheer are all around.

In-line skating has surged in popularity in recent years, but do people roller skate anymore? Are there even nearby places to get your skating fix? Yes, two in fact — Peachtree Family Skate in Peachtree City and Dazzles II in Fayetteville. Their schedules differ night to night, but they have provided and continue to provide skating enjoyment for the community.

Peachtree Family Skate, behind the Peachtree City Post Office, offers skating each night of the week for a different school. They also offer three separate programs on the weekend to attract the entire family. From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., skating is offered for kids and parents. The program is aimed at children under 12 and their parents. Admission is $3.

Family skate runs 1-5 p.m. and costs $4. All skate runs 7-11 p.m. and costs $5. Peachtree Family Skate is open everyday. Call 770-487-8222.

Dazzles II is behind the bowling alley in Guthrie Plaza on Ga. Highway 85 north in Fayetteville. Dazzles is open week nights 6:30-8:30 p.m.; admission is $3 and skate rental is $1. Friday and Saturday nights, the hours are 7-11:30 p.m., admission is $6 and rental is $1. Dazzles also offers matinee hours on the weekend noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and 1-4 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $4 and rental is $1. Call 770-460-ROLL.

Both venues play the games that all roller skating afficionados know and love; the Hokey-Pokey, the Funky Chicken, the Macarena and the YMCA. They also involve the skaters in reverse skates and couple skates. There are concession stands at both places, as well as skate shops and video games.

They may not lead many people to life-altering decisions, but the two skating rinks in Fayette County can be fun places to spend a day.
