Last weekend was a good weekend for high school basketball.

Fayette County residents got to watch two of their long standing rivals, Fayette County and McIntosh high schools, go at it while Starr's Mill and Sandy Creek faced formidable regional opponents.

The Lady Chiefs outlasted the Lady Tigers Friday night, 31-26. The game started slow and McIntosh led the entire time but Fayette County kept it close. Natalie Thornton hit a huge three-pointer for the Lady Tigers to cut the McIntosh lead to one with 14 seconds remaining in the game.

Melanie Schneider led the Lady Chiefs with 13 points, while Kara Davis scored eight for Fayette County.

The boys game started slowly as well, neither team scoring in the first three minutes. The pace eventually picked up and the teams went into the half tied at 22. The Chiefs got their first lead early in the third quarter but could not hang on.

Player after player stepped up for the Tigers and they went on to win 61-50. Andrew Doggendorf scored 20 points and Rodney Plair added 19 for Fayette County, while Josh Burr led the Chiefs in scoring with 19 points. McIntosh hosted Griffin Tuesday night, while Fayette County traveled to Newnan.

Starr's Mill played games both Friday and Saturday. Friday night the team hosted Woodward Academy and Saturday night they traveled to Jonesboro. The Lady Panthers came out flat Friday night and found themselves trailing 11-2 early. They had spurts of brilliance during the game and had cut the lead to seven points with six minutes to go in the fourth quarter. Starr's Mill made too many turnovers, though, and lost 50-32. Amy Holloway led the Lady Panthers in scoring with 12 points.

The boys opened up strong against Woodward Academy and led at the half. The War Eagles came back in the third quarter and produced a one-point lead. The lead continued to change hands in the fourth and with 14 seconds remaining the Panthers had a three-point lead. Woodward tied it at the foul line. Dane Davenport passed the ball quickly to Jason Laney, who was fouled. Laney made one of his two free throws and the panthers emerged victorious, 62-61.

Both the boys and girls defeated Jonesboro Saturday night. The girls got 26 points from freshman Alison Horne and 10 points apiece from Jamie Vining, Amy Holloway and C.C. Shipmon to win 64-51.

The boys led the entire way against Jonesboro, building a 14-point lead in the third quarter and winning 57-51. Donny Lampen scored 17 points for the Panthers, while Matt Houck chipped in 16. Starr's Mill traveled to North Clayton Tuesday night.
