First coffee house of the century to be a musical affair

By MICHAEL BOYLAN
Weekend Editor

Offshoot Productions will kick off the new year and the new century with the Stars on the Southern Crescent coffee house.

The coffee house gives people in the area a chance to see a variety of local and regional acts, while enjoying beverages and desserts. Past coffee houses have included spoken word performances, storytellers, musicians, comedians and singers. This coffee house promises much of the same.

Returning to Stars on the Southern Crescent is the Jennifer Perry Combo. Led by the wisecracking, red haired singer, the band has played all over the region, performing jazz, swing, bebop and torch. The band has made many fans at previous coffee houses and is a wonderful complement to Barney's Goat, the other musical act performing this weekend.

Barney's Goat plays Celtic music, using a variety of musical instruments. The band effortlessly weaves guitars, fiddles, banjos, mandolins, tin whistles, recorders, keyboards and bodhrans together for an eclectic sound. A trio until recently, Barney's Goat has recently added two new members — Mary McFarland, a keyboardist and vocalist, and Tom McNeil, an instrumentalist. Barney's Goat performs a mixture of Celtic classics and original tunes and is certain to enchant audiences this weekend.

Also performing at the coffee house this weekend will be several professional cast members of the upcoming Offshoot Productions production, “Scotland Road.”

The coffee house will be performed at National Heights Baptist Church, on Ga. Highway 54 and Old Norton Road between Peachtree City and Fayetteville. Admission is $6 for the general public and $4 for seniors and children under 12. The doors will open at 7:45 p.m. and the show will begin at 8:15 p.m.

Hot and cold beverages will be offered as well as home-baked desserts. The audience is encouraged to bring mugs from home to receive discounts on hot beverages and to be eligible to receive the Most Unusual Mug award.
