Lady Lakers and Lakers split conference opener

The Lady Lakers and Lakers opened their PeachBelt Conference slate against the University of North Florida with a doubleheader Sunday at the Athletic Center at Clayton State.

The Lady Lakers were defeated by the Lady Opsreys 90-55 while the Lakers defeated the Ospreys 83-81 in overtime.

The Lady Ospreys came back from an opening 4-0 deficit and scored 11 unanswered points to take the early lead. The Lady Lakers never rebounded from that scoring streak and went into the locker room at the half down 50-20. North Florida's offense was unrelenting as they scored 40 more points in the second half to take a 90-55 decision over Clayton State. The Lady Lakers shot 25 percent from the field for the game, and 67 percent from the charity stripe while the Lady Ospreys shot 77 percent from the free throw line and 48 percent from the field.

The Lady Lakers were led by Chelle Warren who scored all of her 14 points in the second half. Mandy Cowan tallied a double-double with 12 points and 11 boards. Joya Collier and Shivar Cofield blocked two shots each.

The Lady Ospreys' Bri Butery led all scorers with 19 points and ten rebounds. Erin Cooke dropped in 16 points while Allia McLeod was four-for-five from the field and a perfect five-for-five from the charity stripe for 13 points. Misty Lavendar dished out a game-high seven assists.

Clayton State drops to 4-7 overall and 0-1 in the PBAC while North Florida improves to 7-4 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

In the men's game, the Lakers and Ospreys traded leads in the first half, with North Florida going in to the break leading 35-32. The second half saw the two teams trade leads until the Ospreys went up by seven with 4:48 left to play in regulation. Clayton State cut the lead to three with 1:46 on the clock, and then Charlie Frazier made three free throws to send the game into overtime.

The Lakers started the period scoring four unanswered points before North Florida tied the game with 2:11 left to play. Clayton State led by as much as six, but the Ospreys' Sedessa Fisher once again tied things up with 16 seconds to go. Antoine Wills made the game-winning jumper with four seconds on the clock.

Antoine Wills came off the bench for the Lakers to score 23 points to lead CCSU while Charlie Frazier dropped in 18 points. Marlin Capers scored 16 points and A. J. Rials tallied a double-double with ten points and ten boards. Rials also led all players with six blocked shots and three steals.

The Ospreys were led by Sedessa Fisher, who scored a game-high 27 points and snatched two steals. Koran Godwin tallied 20 points and Gauis Jenkins recorded a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Cory Caplinger also pulled down ten boards. Joe Gaetano Jr. dished out a game-high seven assists with one block.

The Lakers improve to 5-5 overall and 1-0 in the PBAC while the Ospreys drop to 5-6 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

Clayton State's teams continue their conference slate as they host Augusta State Wednesday, Jan. 5, at the Athletic Center. The Lady Lakers tip off at 5:30 p.m. with the men's game to follow at 7:30.
