The Fayette County Recreation Department will launch its 2000 Church Basketball League this week with practice games.

The league is split into two divisions, A and B. The A Division features five of last year's teams and one new team, while the B division has seven teams, including four new teams. The A division will have a playoff involving all six teams, while the B division will not have a post season tournament.

The A division includes last year's champions, New Hope Baptist, and last year's runner up, Braelinn Baptist. Prince of Peace, First Baptist and Southern Crescent round out the teams returning to the division. The new team is last year's B Division champ, Trinity Fellowship. The team has been reorganized under the name of Christ the King. Last year, Trinity went undefeated during the regular season and took second place in the post season tourney.

In practice games played Monday evening, Christ the King met Southern Crescent, Braelinn Baptist faced First Baptist and New Hope Baptist squared off against Prince of Peace.

The B Division lost last year's champion, Trinity Fellowship, but gained First Methodist, a team that played in the A division last year. Woolsey Baptist and Flat Creek Baptist return to the division, while Lisbon Baptist, Heritage Christian and Fayette Presbyterian are new to the league. Teams will play each other twice, but there will not be a post-season tournament. The regular season champs will receive a team trophy and t-shirts for every player.

The B Division will meet for practice games Friday night. Providence will take on Flat Creek Baptist, Woolsey Baptist will meet First Methodist and Lisbon Baptist will challenge Heritage Christian.

All games are played in the Old Fayette County High School gym. The schedule is subject to change and games last approximately an hour. For information and scores, check out www.sportsstandings.com.
