Samuel Frank Morris

Samuel Frank Morris, 83, Peachtree City, died Aug. 1, 2004. He was born Jan. 10,1921, in Hazel Green, Madison County, Ala., the son of Albert Benjamin and Minnie Isbell Morris. He was graduated from Hazel Green High School, and Jackson State Teachers’ College in Jacksonville, Ala. He served in World War II in the United States Navy, Armed Guard branch, in the Pacific Theatre and participated in most of the major campaigns from Guadalcanal through Okinawa. His ship, the S. S. Logan Victory, was struck by a Japanese suicide plane off Okinawa and he received a commendation for bravery for his actions during this combat. After the war, he returned to Jacksonville to complete his undergraduate degree in Education, and earned his masters in Administration from Auburn University. He served as classroom teacher, basketball coach, elementary and high school principal, and finally as county school superintendent in both Coweta and Meriwether counties. He was a member of the Greenville United Methodist Church for over 35 years, served on the Greenville City Council, the board of the Greenville Banking Company, a member of the American Legion, and recently received a plaque for being a Mason for over 50 years. Services were at the Greenville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Padgett Nelson, and the Rev. Marion Shivers officiating. Interment was at the Greenville City Cemetery. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Sara Dickey Morris, Peachtree City; a son, Sam and Marty Morris, Peachtree City; daughters, Mary Ann and Tom Crofton, Peachtree City, and Carol and Robert Saul, Atlanta; a sister, Mary Alice Hall, Hazel Green, Ala.; and grandchildren, Kevin Crofton, Michel Crofton, Mary Katherine Crofton, Brooke Morris, Katy Morris, Andrew Saul, and Sarah Saul. Martha Elizabeth Smith Magee

Martha Elizabeth Smith Magee, 85, East Point, died Aug. 2, 2004. She was born Aug. 29, 1918 in the Rico community near Palmetto. Her parents were the late John Calvin and Mary Ruth Langley Smith. She was preceded in death by her brother, Charlie Smith. She was graduated from Campbell High School, Fairburn, and earned her teaching certificate at Georgia State College for Women. She taught at Cascade Heights Elementary and Continental Colony Elementary, retiring from the Atlanta Public School system in 1977. She was a charter member of Alpha Nu chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society for Key Women Educators. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and a member of Jefferson Avenue Baptist Church, East Point. Services were at Providence Baptist Church, Rico community, with the Rev. Darwin Caldwell, Jefferson Avenue Baptist Church officiating. Interment was at the Rico Community Cemetery. Survivors include her husband, Edwin Elder Magee, whom she married on June 11, 1948; a daughter, Elizabeth Magee and Mark Charles Refuss, Fayetteville; grandchildren, Sarah Elizabeth Refuss, and William Magee Refuss, Fayetteville; brothers, Bob and Mary Smith, Palmetto, and Hugh and Mary Frances Smith, Peachtree City; and a sister-in-law, Neta Smith, Calhoun; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Elizabeth Magee and Jack Lester, Decatur, Ga.; 11 nephews and nieces; nine great-nephews and nieces; and a great-great-nephew and niece. Hershal Ray Garner

Hershal Ray Garner, 80, Fayetteville, died Aug. 2, 2004. He was born June 6, 1924 in Culman County, Ala. He served in the United States Air Force in World War II and the Korean conflict. He enjoyed playing golf. Services were at the Carl J. Mowell chapel with the Rev. L. O. Thompson, and the Rev. Frank Ellis officiating. Interment was at Camp Memorial Park, Fayetteville. Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Adams Garner, Fayetteville, a brother, John L. and Eleanor Garner, Fayetteville; a sister, Juanita, “Tootsie” Blanton, Fayetteville; and sisters-in-law, Jane Garner Warren, Fayetteville, and Sybil Garner, Greenville, S. Henry Edward Richardson

Henry Edward “Ed” Richardson, 71, Peachtree City, died Aug. 2, 2004. He was born Sept. 21, 1932 in Smith County, Miss. Services were at Christ Our Shepherd Lutheran Church, with the Rev. John Weber and the Rev. Miriam Beecher officiating. Interment was at Westminster Memorial Gardens, Peachtree City. Survivors include his wife, Arlene Richardson, Peachtree City; a son, Travis Richardson, Peachtree City; and a brother, Tommy Richardson. Carl J. Carl Warner Collier

Carl Warner Collier, 74, Riverdale, Fayette County, died Aug. 2, 2004. He was born Dec. 31, 1929 in Bartow County, Ga. Services were at the Fayetteville First Baptist Church with the Rev. JoAnne Russell Smith

JoAnne Russell Smith, 72, Fayetteville, died Aug. 4, 2004. She was born July 7, 1932 in Fulton County. She was a member of the Fayetteville First United Methodist Church.
