Mary Scantling

Mary Jean Scantling, 59, Newnan, died May 8, 2002. She was born March 9, 1943 in Coweta County, the daughter of the late Alvin Eugene Walker and Florence Kee Walker Haynes. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Hall Scantling. She was a lifelong resident of Coweta County and was retired from Bressler Manufacturing Company. She was a member of Happy Valley Baptist Church.
Services were at the Claude A. McKibben chapel, Hogansville with the Rev. Stanley Rogers and the Rev. Tony Thompson officiating. interment was at Oak Hill Cemetery, Newnan.
Survivors include a son, David Gene Meadows, Franklin; a daughter, Ora Jane Scantling, Newnan; a brother, Charlie Walker, Newnan; sisters, Eleanor Haynes, Marion, Ala., and Sheila Walker, LaGrange; 15 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

James Banks

James Banks, 67, Sharpsburg, died May 9, 2002. He was born Oct. 11, 1934 in Fayette County, the son of Fadie and Pearl McEachern Banks.
Graveside services were at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, College Park, with the Rev. Dr. Rick Long officiating.
Survivors include sons Tony and Cynthia Banks, Sharpsburg and Tim Banks, Tyrone; a brother, Junior Banks, Brooks; and grandchildren, Cayla Banks, Tyrone , and Sarah Banks, Sharpsburg.

Robertha Preston

Robertha “Roby” F. Preston, 87, Newnan, died May 11, 2002. She was born May 2, 1915 in Medford, Mass., the daughter of Harry Jennings and MaryAnn Lucas Sickels. She was graduated from State University of New York at Cobleskill and attended Curry School of Expression in Boston, Mass. She had worked for General Electric in Schenectady, N. Y. and after marriage, she and her husband operated and managed Preston Hardware in Oxford, N. Y. She was a longtime member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Oxford and enjoyed traveling, reading, and painting. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leigh Wardyn Preston in 1985 after 36 years of marriage.
A graveside service with family and friends was at Warren Tenbrock Cemetery, Oxford, with the Rev. Father Bruce McDuffie officiating. A memorial service will be held later at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Oxford, at a later date.
Survivors include sons, Bruce and Lisa Preston, Portland, Ore., and Keith G. Preston, Tucson, Ariz.; daughters, Maryleigh Preston and Robert McClure, Grantville, Ga., and Gail Preston and Tom Harris, Richmond, Va.; and grandchildren, Daniel Preston, Jessica Leigh Preston, Elizabeth Harris, and Christina Harris.

Joseph Ortega

Joseph Robert Ortega, 71, Sharpsburg, died May 12, 2002. He was born March 13, 1931 in New York City. He had served in the United States Army and was retired as a warehouse supervisor.
Services were at the Cornerstone United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Campbell officiating.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia Ann Ortega, Sharpsburg; a son, Joseph Ortega, Sharpsburg; daughters, Charlotte Farrell, Sharpsburg, and Lynne Schwat, Patchogue, N. Y.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Robert Goodwin

Robert Keith Goodwin, 25, Newnan, died May 12, 2002. He was born July 30, 1976 in Bentonville, Ark. He was a systems engineer.
Services were at the McKoon Funeral Home, with the Rev. Paul Dennis officiating. Interment was at Coffelt Cemetery, Vaughn, Ark.
Survivors include his wife, Rita Marie Goodwin, Newnan; father, Robert Goodwin, Cave Springs, Ark.; mother, Betty Warner, Lake City, Fla.; a son, Brandon Goodwin, Fayetteville, Ark.; and sisters, Michelle Gates and Mary Long, both of Bentonville, Ark., and Regina Turner, Lake City, Fla.

James VanDrew

James VanDrew, 61, Sharpsburg, died May 13, 2002. He was born June 14, 1940 in Iowa. He was a building plasterer.
Services were at the Moreland United Methodist Church with the Rev. Patrick Jansen officiating.
Survivors include his wife, Martha Ann Rider VanDrew, Sharpsburg; sons, David and Christy VanDrew, Newnan, and Michael VanDrew, Sharpsburg; a brother in California; and five sisters in California.

Amanda Wohlers

Amanda Lynn Wohlers, 18, Sharpsburg, died May 14, 2002. She was born March 4, 1984 in Austell, Cobb County, Ga. She was a computer technician with A+ Technology.
Services were at the McKoon Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Bobby Hunter officiating. Interment was at Oak Hill Cemetery.
Survivors include her parents, Bruce and Vicky Wohlers, Sharpsburg; a brother, Bruce Wohlers Jr., Sharpsburg; a sister, Melissa Wohlers, Sharpsburg; grandfather, Leon Reese, Forsyth, Ga.; and grandmother, Delores Lahmeyer, Iowa.

Aaron Meltzer

Aaron L. Meltzer, 81, Newnan, died May 15, 2002. He was born May 4, 1921 in LaGrange, Ga. He was a retired supervisor of the physical plant at Emory University, and had served in the United States Navy.
Graveside services were at Holly Hill Cemetery, Fairburn, with the Rev. Don Helms officiating.
Survivors include his wife, Jewell Meltzer, Newnan; a daughter, Brenda Washington, Newnan; and grandchildren, Christy Jean Washington and Robert Aaron Washington, both of Newnan.

Ed Brown

Ed Brown, 68, Grantville, died May 16, 2002. He was born Oct. 3, 1933 in Coweta County, He had worked in manufacturing at Bonnell. He and his wife served as foster parents for Coweta County for over 20 years. He was a member of the Bigham Masonic Lodge.
Graveside services were at Bethlehem Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Mike White officiating.
Survivors include his wife, Sue Brown, Grantville; sons, Aubrey Brown and Randy and Beth Brown, all of Grantville; a daughter, Joan and Horace Phillips, Newnan; a brother, Roy Brown, Grantville; and sisters, Helen Attaway, Grantville, Kathryn Barber, Luthersville, and Elizabeth Bryan, Albany, Ga.

Martha Nix

Martha C. Nix, 74, Newnan, died May 16, 2002. She was born Sept. 27, 1927 in Godfrey, Ga., the daughter of the late Herschel and Leora Crump. She was graduated from Clarksville High School and Piedmont College. She met her husband at college and his job took them all over the Southeast United States, living in Lakeland, Fla. for 19 years before coming to Newnan. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and the Cornerstone United Methodist Church.
Graveside services were at the VFW Memorial Park Cemetery, Cornelia, Ga., with Pastor John A. Pinkston officiating.
Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Charlie C. Nix, Newnan; a son, Charles I. and Suzan Nix, Hogansville; a daughter, Denise and Skip Ward, Newnan; a sister, Winnie Lee Masters, Knoxville, Tenn; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Gertrude Madaris

Gertrude Strickland Madaris, 92, Newnan, died May 16, 2002. She was born Aug. 9, 1909 in Meriwether County, Ga. She was retired from the shipping department at Bonnell. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Janie Strickland, a son, Samuel Madaris, and a daughter, Joan Madaris.
Services were at the McKoon Funeral Home, with the Rev. Leonard Ezell officiating. Interment was at the Pitts Cemetery, Newnan.
Survivors include sons, Franklin Madaris and Hubert Madaris, both of Newnan, and Eddie Madaris, Sargent, Ga.; daughters-in-law, Nancy Madaris and Dot Madaris, both of Newnan; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
