Warren B. Young Jr.

Warren B. Young Jr., 57, Fayetteville, died Jan. 23, 2002. He was born April 27, 1944 in DeKalb County. He was preceded in death by his mother, Rebecca McElwaney Young, April 29, 1980. He was graduated from Fayette County High School in 1962 and from LaGrange College in 1966, with a liberal arts degree. He had worked as a photographer for Delta Air Lines, opened his own photography studio, doing work for the State of Georgia as well as architectural photography in Atlanta. He later was the Tourism Director for the Georgia Department of Industry and Trade and worked in international development. He was instrumental in bringing foreign companies to Georgia, as well as several to Fayette County. He also had a hand in developing the state’s Welcome Centers, especially the one in Plains. He was a member of the Fayetteville First United Methodist Church and served as chairman of the building committee and construction of the current sanctuary in the late 1980’s. His grandfather, K. W. McElwaney Sr. was instrumental in the construction of the chapel of the church in 1937. Warren Jr. was also the developer, along with his father, of Rebecca Lakes subdivision in mid Fayette County. Services were at the Fayetteville First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Sam Matthews officiating. Interment was at the Fayetteville City Cemetery. Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Sharron S. Young, Fayetteville; a son, Warren “Burt” and Kay Young III, Fayetteville; a grandson, Warren Burt Young IV; and his father, Warren Young Sr., Fayetteville. Carl J. David Robert Mixon

David Robert “Bob” Mixon, 60, Fayetteville, died Jan. 16, 2002. He was born Aug. 1, 1941 in West Columbia, S. C. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and had worked in the trucking industry for 30 years. He coached baseball and football with the Riverdale Athletic Association and was also past president. He was a founding member of the Riverdale Optimist Club, and was president of the Administrative Council and a trustee for the Faith United Methodist Church, Riverdale. Services were at the Carl J. Mowell chapel with the Rev. Michael Wilson officiating. Interment was at Camp Memorial Park, Fayetteville, with military honors. Survivors include his wife, Shirley Jean Durgin Mixon, Fayetteville; sons, Scott and Susan Mixon, Acworth, Todd D. and Patty Mixon, Oxford, Ala., and Jeff and Sara Mixon, Lawrenceville; a daughter, Jill Mixon, Fayetteville; six grandchildren; and sisters, Ruby, Valeena and Mary Louise. Norvel L. Godwin

Norvel L. “Buck” Godwin, 77, Fayetteville, died Jan. 13, 2002. He was born Nov. 9, 1924 in Green County, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lorain Cooper Godwin. He had served as a corporal and surgical technician in the United States Army in Alaska from 1944 to 1946 and was a member of Flat Creek Baptist Church. Services were at the Carl J. Mowell chapel, Fayetteville, with the Rev. Bill Priester officiating. Interment was at the College Park Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Virginia Moore Godwin; children, Fred, Judy, Jacqueline and Fred Godwin, Troy, Ohio, Karen and Bobby Torbush and Sarah and Judson Robertson, all of Fayetteville, Ginny, Corky, William, Genise and Eric Thorsen, all of Wake Forest, N.C.; and sisters, Juanita Branom, Illinois and June Boonstra, Fayetteville. Kathren Wilson Mathis

Kathren Wilson Mathis, 86, Peachtree City, died Jan. 11, 2002. She was born Nov. 11, 1915 in Clayton County, Ga., the daughter of William and Lonia Laramore Wilson. Services were at the Carmichael-Hemperley chapel with the Rev. Chuck Hodges officiating. Interment was at Westview, Atlanta. She was a member of the Peachtree City United Methodist Church and the Peachtree City Pioneer Club. Survivors include her husband, Jack Mathis; a son, Jere Wilson Mathis, Fayetteville; and a daughter, Jo Bagwell, Macon. Carmichael-Hemperley Funeral Home, Peachtree City, was in charge.

 

Dorothy M. Suddeth

Dorothy M. Suddeth, 79, Peachtree City, died Jan. 15, 2002. She was born Sept. 19, 1922 in Morgan County, the daughter of Callie Stephens and Evie L. Davis Herring. Graveside services were at the Westminster Memorial Gardens, Peachtree City, with Minister Robert Tyler officiating. Survivors include sons William B. Suddeth Jr., Peachtree City, and David C. Suddeth, Decatur; a daughter, Sheryl and Mitchell Lemmo, Stamford, CT; a grandson, Mitchell Lemmo, Stamford, CT; a brother, John Herring, Hardwick, Ga.; and a sister-in-law, Ruth Herring, Frederick, Md. Carmichael-Hemperley Funeral Home, Peachtree City, was in charge.

 

Josephine Audrey Thaxton

Josephine Audrey Thaxton, 81, Fayetteville, died Jan. 14, 2002. She was born Oct. 31, 1920 in Covington, Newton County, Ga. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Thaxton, and was a member of New Hope Baptist Church. Services were at the Carl J. Mowell chapel with the Rev. Barry Thompson officiating. Interment was at Camp Memorial Park, Fayetteville. Survivors include sons, Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Thaxton and Mr. and Mrs. Ken Thaxton, all of Fayetteville; Tony Thaxton, Dunwoody; brothers, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Stubbs and Mr. and Mrs. Tharon Stubbs, all of Covington, and Mr. and Mrs. Winfred Stubbs, Conyers; a sister, Jule and Jack Mask, Covington; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Stacy C. Hemperley Jr.

Stacy C. Hemperley Jr., 85, Tyrone, died Jan. 14, 2002. He was born Oct. 24, 1916 in Clayton County, Ga., the son of Stacy C .and Fannie Letcher Orr Hemperley Sr. Services were at the Carmichael-Hemperley chapel with ministers William O. Priester and Wallace Simmone officiating. Interment was at Westminster Memorial Gardens, Peachtree City. Survivors include a daughter, Sandra and Lawrence Barnest, Fayetteville; grandsons, Britt Chapman and Kevin and Leslie Chapman; great-grandchildren, Kayla Chapman and Connor Chapman; and a sister, Frances and Wallace Simmone, Hapeville.
