Big names at smaller summer concert series at The FredTue, 02/02/2010 - 3:17pm
By: Michael Boylan
There are some changes to the summer concert series at the Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater in 2010. They are going to one concert a weekend instead of two and BMW of South Atlanta is now the title sponsor. The biggest news to come out of the announcement on Monday morning however was the inclusion of two of the acts on the list, Cheap Trick, appearing June 5, and Georgia’s own The B-52’s on July 24. “There’s a little something for everybody in the lineup,” said Amphitheater manager Nancy Price. “We think we’ll sell out.” The concert series starts May 15 with disco icons Gloria Gaynor and The Village People. Gaynor is best known for the anthem “I Will Survive,” and The Village People are best known for their hits “YMCA,” “Macho Man,” and “In the Navy.” Cheap Trick arrives June 5. They have sold 200 million records, appeared on 29 movie soundtracks and have 40 gold and platinum awards. Cheap Trick is known for hits such as “Surrender,” “I Want You to Want Me,” and “The Flame.” Returning to The Fred on June 26 is America. The group has recorded such classics as “A Horse With No Name,” “Ventura Highway,” “Tin Man,” and “You Can Do Magic.” Also performing that night is singer-songwriter Christopher Cross, best known for the songs “Sailing,” and the theme song from the film, “Arthur.” Boz Scaggs will perform on July 10. Performing a blend of rock, R&B and jazz, Scaggs is a Grammy winner known for songs like “Lowdown” and “Silk Degrees.” The B-52s are very well known. Their career spans over 25 years and probably best known for their best-selling album “Cosmic Thing,” which featured hit songs like “Love Shack,” “Deadbeat Club,” and “Channel Z.” Their style of rock has people on their feet and dancing the night away. The final show in the series will feature Jose Feliciano. He’s been acclaimed by critics across the world as the “greatest living guitarist” of all times, awarded over 45 gold and platinum records and winner of 8 Grammy awards, and recognized as the first Latin artist to cross over in to the English market. Feliciano will perform some of his hit songs like “Rain,” “California Dreamin’” and “Light My Fire.” Season tickets for the summer concert series will go on sale March 6 and season ticket holders from last year received information on the lottery for seats this year. Tickets for individual shows, if there are any remaining, will go on sale March 15. The only ticket price that went up are lawn seats. In the coming weeks, The Fred will also announce several spotlight shows and there will also be numerous community events at the venue throughout the year including a local jazz night, an open mic night, a Memorial Day concert, Flicks at The Fred, storytelling around Halloween, Hometown Holiday and more.
