Hwy. 74S rezoning eyedTue, 01/26/2010 - 5:05pm
By: John Munford
The Fayette County Commission Thursday night will consider a commercial developer’s rezoning request for an already-approved shopping center just south of Peachtree City on Ga. Highway 74 at Redwine Road. Southern Pines Plantation is asking Fayette County to change from the existing zoning of community commercial, office-institutional and agriculture residential. SPP wants the main 27-acre portion of the site for the shopping center to be rezoned for solely community commercial use. SPP is also asking for 5.37 acres of the property to be rezoned from community commercial, office-institutional and agriculture residential to simply office institutional. Both requests will be considered Thursday night at the commission’s 7 p.m. meeting at the county’s Stonewall government complex, which is located at the southwest corner of Ga. highways 54 and 85. SPP is already approved to build a 176,000-square-foot shopping center with office uses on the property. That’s roughly the same size as The Avenue in Peachtree City. Also on the plan are five outparcel lots along Hwy. 74. The property was rezoned by a previous county commission back in 2000 over opposition from Peachtree City officials who worried about its proximity to the Wilshire Pavilion shopping center just to the north. SPP is donating 50 acres at the rear of the property to protect the existing Brechin Park subdivision in unincorporated Fayette County. SPP later approached Peachtree City officials about annexing a small portion of the site to allow access to the city’s sewer system, but the request was denied by the City Council in December. login to post comments |
