So, let’s “Google it!” What is the Epiphany of Our Lord? It is the wonderful liturgical festival observed every year on Jan. 6. It is the oldest of the Christmas festivals and originally the most important. Since Jan. 6 is most often a weekday, Lutherans and liturgical Protestants sometimes shift the celebration of Epiphany to the Sunday immediately before or following the 6th. Epiphany is also a season that lasts until the beginning of Lent and encompasses four to nine Sundays, depending on the date of Easter. Local churches announce New Year’s Eve and ‘Watch Night’ services Dec. 31Several churches in the Fayette area will hold services on New Year’s Eve to usher in the new decade. Called “Watch Night” services by some, the Watch Night tradition began in 1732 with the Moravians in Germany. It was a time for giving thanks for the blessings of the previous year and praying for God’s blessings and good things in the upcoming year. People gathered in churches before midnight and continued their vigil into the new year. Visit from St. NicholasThe children who attended the Christmas Eve services at The Cathedral of Christ the King, Sharpsburg, received a special story and visit. Bishop David Epps gathered the children near the altar and told them a short story about Bishop Nicholas of Myra and how he later became a “saint.” Upon the conclusion of the story, the door opened and in came Bishop Nicholas. Every child present received the gift of a “gold” clad U. S. dollar. Some said that Saint Nicholas looked a lot like Jon Paul Landon, a senior at East Coweta High School. Photo/Special. Healing ministry classesA 13-week class on Scripture passages related to healings performed by Christ was taught at the Cathedral of Christ the King in Sharpsburg. Teachers were Bonnie Bar, MSN, RN, an associate professor of nursing at the State University of West Georgia in Carrollton, and James Taylor, DPC, a chaplain at Piedmont-Fayette Hospital. Completion of the class is a requirement for members of the order of St. Luke the Physician, an international, interdenominational healing order.
