Fairburn population will double overnight

With the development currently underway, Fairburn's population could double.

That was the assessment City Administrator Tony Cox gave the Fairburn City Council during its Monday night meeting.

Cox said Fairburn's current population is approximately 7,350. But all the subdivisions and town homes currently underway will mushroom the city's population to nearly 13,000.

The city's population in the 2000 Census was 5,464 and has already increased 35 percent, Cox added.

The biggest development slated for the city is the Durham Lake golf course community. When the first phase of development is completed, nearly 900 homes will sprout up on the city's south side.

Harbor Lakes, another development at Durham Lake, will bring nearly 400 homes nearby.

In addition to the residential development, Fairburn's commercial community also will see significant growth.

Durham Lakes shopping center will eventually feature a grocery store and work on the road to the center is already under construction.

Another shopping center, BJK shopping center, is planned for Ga. Highway 74. The shopping center is currently in the sewer design process and is still waiting wetlands permitting.

Cox plans to update the City Council each month on the progress of the developments.
