Dignitaries break ground for new senior facility

A groundbreaking ceremony for the Nelson McGhee Jr. Retirement Complex, 6280 Old National Highway, College Park, was conducted this week.

County Commissioner William "Bill" Edwards, who represents South Fulton County, joined Brenda Sanford, executive director of the Intergenerational Resource Center Inc., developer of the complex.

On a site just south of Flat Shoals Road, the complex will be built in three phases: 14 single-family ranch style homes, a 6,000-sq. ft. supportive services building, and a double-wing assisted living facility for seniors who need minimal support or have memory disorders.

The Fulton County Environment and Community Development Department provided approximately $244,000 toward construction costs. HOME Investment Partnership funds are provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to help low- and very-low-income elderly persons.

The complex is named in honor of the late Dr. McGhee, a physician who served the county for more than 30 years. He was a member of the Fulton County Board of Health, and served as chairman of the obstetrics and gynecology department and interim president at the Morehouse School of Medicine.

The IRC is a non-profit senior care agency that helps older and physically challenged persons live as independently as possible. For information phone Brenda Sanford at 404-524-1023.
