Former UPS exec running for Congress

Local businessman Chris Durant has announced that he will seek the Republican nomination for Georgia's 5th District U.S. Congress seat.

The district includes parts of South Fulton.

Under the motto "new Republican leadership for a new millennium," Durant said, "Fifth District voters are looking for fresh leadership and effective representation."

In his announcement press release, Durant said he will focus on expanding Georgia's trade and economic ties abroad while emphasizing family values, environmental awareness and increased tax relief initiatives.

He added that he believes aging representation from both parties and overwhelming intervention from select special interest groups has left a large percentage of 5th District voters disenfranchised. He will bring a fresh perspective, unencumbered by obligations to any specific group, dedicated to the values of his fellow Georgians, he promised.

Durant describes himself as a moderate conservative on social issues because of his pro-choice stance and his support of conservation initiatives. He said he has further established himself as a strong fiscal conservative by supporting a number of Republican initiatives such as tax reform through the proposed flat tax legislation and the elimination of the so-called death tax.

Increased military spending that focuses on increased wages for active-duty members, expansion of veteran and retiree benefits, and defense initiatives designed to increase internal security also are measures Durant promised to support.

"Having the opportunity to serve my fellow Georgians would be the fulfillment of a life-long goal," said Durant. "I am asking District 5 voters for the chance to bring new Republican leadership that reflects the values and interests of Georgia to the United States Congress."

Durant and his wife, Crystal, live in Roswell where they attend the First Baptist Church of Atlanta.

As a former executive with United Parcel Service, Durant said he has the leadership and management experience to qualify for the office.
