Firm to expand sewer plant for $127 million By JOHN
THOMPSON
Fulton County will spend more than $127 million to upgrade its sewer plant at Camp Creek, but the decision was not without controversy. Last week, the County Commission voted 5-2 to award the bid to Azurik North America to design and operate the facility for 15 years. The company was the second highest bidder, but Commissioner William "Bill" Edwards supported the bid after having some of his questions answered. Edwards said he was concerned with the company's financial stability before the vote, but believes it is solvent to take on the project. The biggest factor in approving the bid, Edwards said, is the company's willingness to take on any liability or fines the plant might incur. "The city of Atlanta is paying millions of dollars in fines for violations. The company has assured me that they would pay any fines, instead of the taxpayers of Fulton County," he said. Edwards also was convinced the quality of product the company builds is high, since it will treat the sewage with ultraviolet light, instead of chlorine, he said.
