Home schooled drivers need school board certificate

If you're home schooling your teenager, there's a relatively new Georgia law you need to be aware of, the Teenage Driver Responsibility Act.

The act requires local school systems to certify that a student's attendance pattern, discipline pattern and record will allow him or her to have a Georgia driver's permit or license. This section of the law became effective Jan. 1, 1998.

The Fayette County School District is required by law to receive this information from parents/guardians of home school students who are 15-17 years old and are residents of Fayette County. If the qualifications are met, a "certificate of attendance" is issued to the student. This document is required in order to apply for a Georgia driver's license or learners permit.

Home school students interested in obtaining certificates of attendance should come by the Fayette County Board of Education at 210 Stonewall Ave. west in Fayetteville during regular business hours, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.
