Grant will help kids communicate

Children with limited verbal skills will find it easier to communicate with the staff at the Joseph Sams School thanks to a grant from the Davidson Fund of the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta.

Lana Carr, executive director of the school, said the fund's $2,500 grant will be used to purchase augmentative communication devices. "The augmentative communication program continues to enable children with limited communication skills a means of interaction with peers and family as well as to have some control over their environment," said Carr.

Founded in 1984 to help school-aged children with intellectual, physical or developmental challenges, the school now provides individualized special education to children from 18 months to 15 years old from six metro Atlanta counties.

The Community Foundation was founded in 1951 and matches donors with nonprofit organizations. With more than $300 million in assets, it is one of the largest community foundations in the nation.
