Woman charged for role in 2-year old fatal crash

A Fayette woman has been arrested for causing a wreck that killed a local man on Ga. Highway 92 south two years ago.

Cathy Jones Selman, 48, was arrested last week and charged with misdemeanor vehicular homicide and failure to yield at a stop sign. The wreck, which occurred Sept. 9, 1999, claimed the life of 53-year-old Charles Aubrey Rivers.

The length of time in filing the charges was partially due to a delay in the blood alcohol tests returning from the crime lab, said Lt. Brian Woodie of the Fayette County Sheriff's Department. Also, the charges were delayed while Selman recuperated from injuries she received in the accident, Woodie added.

According to the accident report, Selman was turning left off Lowery Road onto Hwy. 92 when she pulled into the path of Rivers' car. The two vehicles collided once, both rotating in different directions and striking a second time before they came to rest, the report states.

Woodie said Selman wasn't notified of Rivers' death until last week. Deputies did not pass that along to Selman after the accident because of her medical condition and assumed that her family had told her, Woodie added.

"It's a tragic situation and unfortunately both families have to relive this," Woodie said.
