Lady Lakers get first conference win against Lander Clayton College & State University freshman Amber Wood scored 24 second-half points, including 10 straight free throws in the final 45 seconds of the game, leading the Lady Lakers to their first conference win of the season Saturday, 88-84 over Lander University. Wood, whose 26 points in the contest were both a game high and career high, was perfect in the second half five of five from the field,four of four from three-point territory and 10 of 10 from the free throw line. The Lady Lakers trailed 37-31 at halftime and 43-35 early in the second half before going on an 18-4 run with 17:35 remaining. Clayton State took the lead for good, 44-43, with 14:22 remaining on a basket by freshman Jo Kimbrel. Wood supplied much of the offense down the stretch, scoring her 24 second-half points in the final 12 minutes of the game, which was 24 of the team's final 40 points. The CCSU men's basketball team did not fare as well Saturday. They dropped their third straight Peach Belt Conference contest, falling to Lander 82-61. The Senators took the lead at the 14:51 mark of the first half and led the rest of the game. Lander led 38-26 at halftime and by double digits the entire second half. Junior guard Charlie Frazier Jr. led the Lakers with 15 points, hitting six of nine shots from the field, one of three from three-point territory and two of two from the free throw line. Junior guards Jerry Johnson, of Riverdale, and Marty Fears each chipped in nine points, while junior guard Kareen Harris finished with eight points. |
