Starr's Mill wins Panther Duals By MICHAEL BOYLAN The Starr's Mill Panthers finished the regular season of wrestling at home Saturday in fashion by winning the Panther Duals meet. Starr's Mill faced four teams in the first round, defeating all four, and then a match with Westminster, the school that advanced from the other bracket. Starr's Mill defeated Douglas County 75-6, Riverwood 84-0, Chapel Hill 75-6 and Callaway 75-6, before defeating Westminster 63-9. All of the Panther wrestlers performed well at the meet, gearing up for what will certainly be a competitve area meet at Fayette County High School this weekend. "There are good wrestlers from a lot of schools that we have to watch out for," said Coach Mickey Statham, who expects Stockbridge, Eagle's Landing, Fayette County, McIntosh and Henry County to present some competition. Starr's Mill finished the regular season with a record of 28-3 in dual meets. They placed third at the South Metro and Dalton tournaments and first in the Starr's Mill Invitational and the Hoover Invitational. The Panthers also had a lot of individuals with outstanding records this season. Ariston Bowers, 152, went 49-1 this year, while Christopher Coleman, 160, went 46-2. Jason Kiefer, 145, finished the regular season at 43-5, while Danny Davidson, 140, went 48-8 and Brian Kyser, 135, went 28-4. Rusty Lyle, 171, went 33-4, while Matt Fuhrman, 171, went 27-6 and Dan Fuhrman, 189, went 17-4. Tony Tofanelli, 215, went 29-6, while Lee Gresham, 112, went 35-9. Kevin Trickey, 119, finished the season with a 32-14 record, while Scott Hartpence, 130, finished at 36-17 and Tyler Kourajian, 103, finished at 31-15. The area meet will begin Friday at 5 p.m. and will start up again Saturday morning at 9. |
