Though it hasn't felt like winter in quite a while, the winter season of high school athletics marches on toward the postseason.

The local basketball teams faced formidable region foes and intra-county rivals this weekend as the end of the regular season approaches.

Friday night, McIntosh hosted Mt. Zion, Jonesboro. The Lady Chiefs got their second consecutive win by defeating the Lady Bulldogs 47-41. McIntosh led 16-13 after the first quarter and 24-20 at the half. Though their offensive output in the third quarter was sluggish, limited to only six points, the Lady Chiefs exploded in the fourth quarter for 17 points. Whitney Wallis led the Lady Chiefs in scoring with 13 points, while Lyndsey Murphy added 10 points and Megan Bartels scored seven points.

The boys game started the same as the girls game. The Chiefs led 16-13 at the end of the first quarter but found themselves down 23-20 by the end of the second quarter. Mt. Zion out-scored McIntosh 17-6 in the third quarter and established a 50-36 lead. The Chiefs battled back to within five points with two-and-a-half minutes remaining but could not close the gap any further.

McIntosh fell to 6-5 in the region with the loss. Josh Burr led the team in scoring with 21 points, while Drew Hartley added 17 points and Scott Prah added six points.

McIntosh hosted North Clayton last night and will travel to Evans Friday.

Starr's Mill faced Lovejoy Friday night. The Lady Panthers battled the sixth-ranked Lady Wildcats to a 61-60 overtime victory. Alison Horne scored 16 points, while Erin Ricker added 15 points.

The boys team was not as lucky. They led 17-13 at the end of the first quarter as Donny Lampen scored 11 points. Lovejoy caught fire in the second quarter, hitting seven three-pointers and establishing a 48-43 lead at the half. Starr's Mill couldn't close the gap any further and lost 87-71. Lampen scored 21 points on the evening, while Micah Fletcher added 13 points and Arlando Hinton added 10 points.

Saturday, Starr's Mill traveled to Sandy Creek. The Lady Panthers, still hot from their upset of Lovejoy, defeated the Lady Patriots 57-42. With 5:13 left in the game, the score was tied 40-40 but Starr's Mill went on a 9-0 run soon after and took control of the game. The major difference in the game came from the teams' performances at the foul line. Starr's Mill scored 21 points from the charity stripe, while the Lady Patriots only scored 10.

"I thought we played good defense on them for the most part," said Sandy Creek Coach Mark DeCourcy. "Krystal McBride did an excellent job covering the point guard. Jessica DeMooney led Sandy Creek in scoring with 13 points, while Colay White added 10 points and Tiffany Paschal and McBride each added seven points.

The Lady Panthers were led in scoring by Teri Cobb with 15 points. Alison Horne scored 14 points in the victory.

The Sandy Creek boys defeated Starr's Mill 80-64. The patriots were without four of their players Saturday, but their big guns were still present. L.T. Lockett notched 34 points against the Panthers, while William Belton added 26 points and Richard Lott scored 10 points. Belton and Lott also combined for a majority of Sandy Creek's rebounds. Lampen led Starr's Mill in scoring with 17 points, while Bret Zondervan added 12 points and Che Brewer scored nine points.

Sandy Creek hosted Heritage Tuesday night and will play at Union Grove Friday. Starr's Mill played at Newnan last night and will travel to take on the Jonesboro Cardinals Friday.
