Fayette students playing the market

Some people lost a great deal of money in the fluctuating stock market in 2000, but students at McIntosh High School skirted around market uncertainties and grew their initial investments through the Stock Market Game.

Their carefully calculated decisions paid off in the form of being declared the winners of the Georgia Council on Economic Education's Stock Market Game for the Fayette County schools' region in the Internet game version. After starting with a hypothetical investment of $100,000, they finished the 10-week competition with a portfolio valued at $123,363.

Teacher Diane Basham served as advisor to team members Ashley Darrow, Katie Decell and Elizabeth Blanco during the game last fall.

Every fall and spring, student teams compete in two Stock Market Game categories, paper and Internet. Students playing the paper game version mail in trading forms while students playing the Internet edition trade online.

Each year, more than 40,000 students from public and private elementary, middle and high schools compete in Georgia's Stock Market Game, the second largest in the nation.
