Future scientists getting ready for science fair

Ninety science projects developed by students from Fayette's middle and high schools have been selected to compete in the Fayette County Science Fair, which was scheduled for Jan. 30.

It is expected that approximately 18 of the projects will go to the regional competition at the Regional Educational Service Agency (RESA) Feb. 21.

High school science teachers, retired science educators, as well as representatives from the Fayette County Extension Service, Fayette Clean and Beautiful, and local science-based industries will judge the projects.

A $75 savings bond will be given to the first place winner and a $50 savings bond will go to the person placing second.

"Scientific research and teaching students how to solve problems is in the heart of what good science is about. Science fair projects bring all these skills together," says Sharon Boyer, coordinator of science of Fayette County Schools.

All students competing at the county level will receive a science fair T-shirt. In addition, Fayette Clean and Beautiful will present awards to students who have projects dealing with environmental issues.
