Almost 100 motorists in Fayette County and Fayetteville were cited for seatbelt violations during the five-day Thanksgiving holiday crackdown on seatbelt and child safety seat violations.

But only seven tickets were written for failure to meet Georgia's child safety seat laws, according to the Fayette County Sheriff's Department and the Fayetteville Police Department. Both agencies participated in the statewide "Strap and Snap" and the nationwide Operation America Buckles Up Children campaigns over the holiday period.

Fayette County deputies wrote 49 tickets for seat belt violations, 43 tickets for speeding, three for insurance-related violations and 17 other traffic citations. Fayetteville police officers wrote 47 tickets for seat belt violations, 40 speeding tickets, 10 uninsured motorist citations and 23 for other traffic citations.

Fayetteville police spokesman Lt. Tom Kirkbride said the department also made four DUI arrests and four drug arrests.

The Sheriff's Department's numbers indicate activity only for the 10-unit traffic enforcement division because numbers were unavailable from the road patrol division, said Maj. Wayne Hannah.
