You can get the ear of state Superintendent of Schools Linda C. Schrenko this week.

Schrenko will host a town hall meeting in Fayetteville at the LaFayette Educational Center Thursday from 7 - 9 p.m.

She is expected to speak for the first 30 minutes of the gathering on education reform and ways to make proposed changes, according to Amanda Seals, information specialist to the superintendent. She also will outline her legislative priorities for the 2001 legislative session.

The remainder of the program will be opened up to the audience for a question and answer session, she said.

Fayetteville is on the last leg of Schrenko's statewide series of meetings, which started in August. Seals said there have been 18 meetings so far.

The major concerns voiced by parents and educators across Georgia have been the implications of House Bill 1187, also known as the A+ Reform Act, Seals noted. Class size, property tax rates, program cuts in middle school programs, and financial cuts in high school lab programs have consistently surfaced as areas of public interest, Seals said.

Schrenko was first elected as state superintendent of schools in 1994 and was reelected in 1998. She has been a vocal opponent of many of the reforms included in HB 1187 since its passage last spring.

Schrenko is scheduled to return to Fayette County Monday, Dec. 11 to address the Peachtree City Rotary at 7 a.m. at the Wyndham Peachtree Conference Center.
