Discovery's Brajkovic the overall winner

After a week and 667-miles of racing, 23-year-old Janez Brajkovic (Slovenia) of the Discovery Channel Pro Cycling team maintained a 12-second advantage in the General Classification for the final three days and won the 2007 Tour de Georgia. Second place in the G.C. was won by American Christian VandeVelde of Team CSC, and Spain’s David Canada Gracia of Prodir-Saunier Duval finished third overall.

With less than two miles to the top of Brasstown Bald Mountain, American Levi Leipheimer of Discovery Channel Pro Cycling team made his move past a group of four riders to capture Stage Five of the 2007 Tour de Georgia. The victory, in a time of 4.33’33”, is Leipheimer’s second straight at the Tour de Georgia.

As Tour de Georgia cyclists race through the streets of Atlanta toward the finish Sunday, motorists on the downtown connector may need to seek alternative routes around two interstate ramps that will be closed for the event.

Discovery's Leipheimer wins time trial

American Levi Leipheimer mastered the uphill Individual Time Trial of the 2007 Tour de Georgia for a second stage victory for his Discovery Channel Pro Cycling team. Leipheimer outdistanced American David Zabriskie of Team CSC by 41 seconds; Zabriskie finished improved from third place in last year’s ITT to second. Australian Nathan O’Neill of Health Net presented by Maxxis finished third in the stage at 1’18” back.

Belgian rider Giani Meersman of the Discovery Channel Pro Cycling team used fresh legs to sprint pass a group of eight riders with 700 meters to go to win Stage Three of the 2007 Tour de Georgia. David Canada Gracia (Spain) of Prodir-Saunier Duval finished second and Meersman’s teammate Janez Brajkovic (Slovenia) finished third in the stage.

Stevic wins stage two, Contrini still in the overall lead

Ivan Stevic of the Toyota-United Pro Cycling team burst away from a pack of 80 riders up the 20 percent grade of Clocktower Hill and hung on the final 800 meters for a Stage Two victory at the 2007 Tour de Georgia. Top sprinters Juan Jose Haedo (Argentina) of Team CSC finished second and American Fred Rodriguez of Predictor-Lotto finished third in the stage, two seconds behind the winner.

Daniele Contrini (Italy) of Tinkoff Credit Systems broke away from four riders with about seven miles remaining to win the first stage of the 2007 Tour de Georgia, one of North America’s top cycling events.

Road closings for race day

Stage One (Peachtree City to Macon) of the 2007 Tour de Georgia will be held on Monday, April 16.

The race is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. at the Peachtree City Municipal Plaza (City Hall/Library) and wind its way over 16 miles through Peachtree City, portions of unincorporated Fayette County and Brooks. The estimated travel time for the entire Fayette County portion of the race is approximately forty (40) minutes.
