Palmetto City Council member Jeff Yasson resigned his position May 29 citing family obligations. An appointment to fill the position is expected at the council’s July meeting.

Palmetto Police officers in the early morning hours July 21 gave chase and helped apprehend two men after the pair invaded a home in Chattahoochee Hill Country, assaulted one of the occupants and stole her vehicle. The woman was struck but not seriously injured in the incident.

Palmetto City Council July 24 adopted the 2007-2008 General Fund budget, set at $7,455,825. The new budget includes the provision for several new police officers, a move which numerous residents have requested on an ongoing basis for the past six months.

A second person has been arrested in connection with the Feb. 22 theft of copper wiring from a shuttered Photocircuits building in Peachtree City, police said.

Burglars sought in holiday thefts

One man was arrested and charges are pending on two other men in two business burglaries Dec. 15 and 16 in Palmetto.

Timothy Foster, 23, of Palmetto, was charged with two counts of burglary, one count of criminal damage and one count of theft by taking, according to Palmetto Det. John Cooper. Related to the investigation, 19 year-old Brittany Morris, of College Park, was charged with obstruction, said Cooper.

Gregory Rusch entered the race for Palmetto City Council to establish a positive change. Rusch is new to politics, challenging incumbents who have been in office for years. Palmetto needs council members to be free thinkers, with the ability to visualize the possibilities for the town. The council must have the willingness to surround themselves with a team of experts such as city planners and developers to advise the council.

Gregory Rusch is a leader who gets the job done. A resident of Palmetto over three years, he has immersed himself in the community. He is an active member of the Palmetto Community Association, responsible for raising money for beautification and sponsoring of events. Mr. Rusch has always been a pioneer when it comes to revitalization. He opened his retail store "Rusch Home "in College Park before it was trendy to do so. He was the first to set high standards for renovation and quality design. His career as an Interior Designer has allowed him to put his talents to work, restoring historical homes like the one in which he currently resides. It is now a bed and breakfast, promoting tourism in Palmetto.

I never really imagined myself as a candidate in a political campaign until now. I am running for Palmetto City Council because our community faces important challenges in the years ahead. Thoughtful leadership is required to ensure a safe and prosperous Palmetto. I want to preserve the future of our city. With every new clear cut lot development and with every new backlit sign towering over the roadway, we loose a resource that is very special, our small town character.

I have lived in Palmetto since 1987, when I came to work for the Georgia Baptist Children’s Homes and Family Ministries as administrator of the Palmetto Campus. I am currently the vice president of finance for the home. I have had the pleasure of not only living but also working in our city.
