I think of those days when I lived in LA where my water, gas, and electric cost about $50 a month.

We are having a "pioneer" weekend this weekend at our house. My daughter was whining last week about something she could not have (unusual for her), but we felt the kids have a lesson to be learned about gratitude, appreciation, and hardship. So...we will go the weekend without turning on lights - I have candles and an oil lamp for when it gets dark, we will not run the gas - we will just have to dress warm and build a fire if need be, there will be no television, no computer, no cell phone, no iPod.....well, you get my drift. Hey! I guess that means I don't have to cook! We'll just have to roast weiners or something.

You wouldn't happen to have a butter churner you could loan us? Smiling

I'll be sure to log in on Monday to let you know how it goes....that is, if we survive!

Nothing better than a "hands-on lesson" for the kiddos! Hope you weather it well yourself while they are learning! Good luck!

Can't wait to see how your weekend turns out! (May try it with my grands!)

Although that might not be a problem as it might be cold enough to put milk, etc outside!--remember garage door is electrically operated so make sure to have a long cord to open door, or are you using auto?.----will you have land phone? Are you making bread and stew in the fireplace? It is so hard to remember when you are trying to not use things that definitely are "extravagances" or so we used to think. I admire you for making your children/child learn--I remember one Thanksgiving when my kids were teens and said the holiday meant nothing to them---we had bread and water for breakfast, lunch and dinner--at least they did--I had a nice breakfast, lunch and dinner since I did not share their view but I did not cook traditional Thanksgiving dinner--they never thought I would go through with it and never again said a holiday had no meaning for them. Friends thought I was terrible and kept wanting to invite us all over for Thanksgiving but I said No thanks. Sometime you have to make a point. I did and I see you are doing the same--good luck!

Does your hot water run on gas? If so, don't forget about the cold showers! I think this will be a fun lesson for you and your husband too. Keep us posted.
