Paying for the school class room "supplies"??

I remember growing up, that when school time rolled around my parents bought items needed such as pencils, paper and erasers for me to use at school.

I am puzzled at why the Fayette County school my kids are in from pre-k to 3rd grade are sending letters stating items to bring to school that seem more like class room use materials rather then the children use.

Things such as...

Crayons- Np with this.
pencils- Np with this.
paper - Np with this.
Dry Erase markers- Since when do kids start having these as there desk tops??
Tissue - ???What???
Hand Sanitizer- ???What???
Glue- Np with this.
Copy paper/Typing Paper- ???What???
Scissors- ???What???

So far from Pre-k to Third grade we have been sent letters stating these things are needed for the child for the school year.

My question is this, Where is the money the school/s have for buying the supplies/materials for the classroom?

Are the schools having problems handling the money/monies?

Are the schools miss using the money/monies?

Are the schools not recieving money/monies?

Also, the letters state to not put our childs name on the supplies. Why is this?
Is it because it is used as a whole for the class?

If the Dry Erase markers are used by each child, then why does each child need a dry erase marker? If the markers are used for the class room board then Why does the teacher not have the supplies needed for her/him to teach the class?

Do the schools no longer have soap and water?

Do the schools no longer have paper towels?

Also, Art class- all art supplies was provided by the school.

Again, I remember the school suppling the class room materials, not my parents.

These are just a few questions that come to mind when I see these letters for school supplies.

If the school is hurting for money then it needs to be addressed A.S.A.P!!!

Do you know what teachers pay for out of their pockets each and every year? For you to question the very basic classroom supply list suggests that you expect others to pay for the supplies your child will need and use everyday. It is your metality that frustrates teachers and parents like me who will end up gladly paying my share and probably your share for these basic needs for our childrens classrooms. Do not bash these hardworking teachers who work long hours and give so much to our children. They are working under tough conditions and at my childs school they are doing it with attitudes that you could learn something from.

Yes, I am aware that some teachers do pay out of pocket for items. My belief is 'IT IS NOT THE TEACHERS PLACE BUT THE COUNTY/STATEs PLACE TO MAKE SURE THE MONEY IS THERE IN THE SCHOOL/S." Which is why you will find in my post that if the schools need help with money, we should be working on helping them get whats needed/fixed.
Now, yes I do expect the County and State to pay for the school materials. As always I pay for my kid/s personal materials. Don't worry about paying for my share of the basic needs, they are always met. Funny though how you see some of the materials listed as "Needed". Funny how I got buy on far less , my parents did as well, as did there parents, but any ways, to each his/her own.
I have searched my post/blog multiple times and I still do not see where I have, in your words, bashed these hard working teaachers. No one is asking there to pay out of there pockets. What is being stated is, the COUNTY and STATE needs to step it up and if they need help figuring it out, we the parents should be willing to step in and help them do there JOB they are PAID to do.(Referring to the COUNTY/STATE)
It is so sad that when one posts/speaks her/his mind/opinion that people such as you take offence and feel the need to lash out in negative tones/manners. As far as learning, be sure to apply it to your self first, you have conjured up me bashing the teachers in my post. Again, that is no where in my post/blog. Its ok though, I pray for you and hope you get the help needed for the apparent hurt you have recieved some where in the past.

You left out all of the possessives.
Your metality?
How much do you pay out of pocket per year, not refunded, for other students? Is it a serious amount? (send the parents a bill). What does the administration want you to do about supplies? Have you asked?
What "long hours?" Don't most of you go home early in the day? Don't you get 2-3 months off plus numerous days?
What is the "so much" you give to our children?
What are the "tough conditions?" Parents or kid's attitude?
Who has the "attitudes" that I could learn from? The teacher's attitude or the student's or the parents?
I appreciate teachers and cops, etc., but I hate griping all of the time.

The teachers that I was privileged to work with for over 30 years did the following:
Paid more than $2000.00 a year on materials for their classrooms.
Spent more than three hours a day AFTER HOURS grading papers, contacting parents, preparing lesson plans, preparing materials for science experiments, etc.
In California, teachers were paid for 10 months a year. Their 'vacation' during the summer break was an 'unpaid' vacation.
They spend hours developing strategies to try to reach each and every child in their classroom so that child could learn! That's giving a lot - and you should be grateful.
Tough conditions? - The feeling that they are not appreciated.
Your attitude regarding this issue? Being able to express gratitude for a public school that is achieving the desired goal - teaching your child to be a contributing citizen to society.

Times how ever many teachers there were must have financed nearly everything!

I think teacher's classes last about 5-6 hours per day don't they?

Teacher's still grade papers for 3 hours?

I don't think many calls are made to parents any more!

Isn't a teacher's salary for one year? 9-10 months in session and 2-3 at home or college?

Well, the hours developing strategies isn't working anymore!

Myself, I think it is the State and local administration to blame. Teachers are like other implementors; they will do what they are told to do if they know how.

My wife taught in the combat zones of Fulton County for 30 years and got little or no support from the parents and had to buy supplies for her class room. And in kindergarten you can be assured it is probably the most supply intensive grade there is. With that noted in her generosity over the years we NEVER came close to having to dish out $2000 bucks. Dang... just how much do those Californy teachers make anyways? No wonder that hell hole is bankrupt. We did pay out an average of $200 - $400 dollars a year.

She did have to grade papers, do planners, report cards and several other tasks during the year in the evenings. 3 hours a night IS a huge stretch. And as she would often say her ample days off for holidays and the summer more than made up for that. I did hear her mention many times how grateful she was to the generous pay she derived as a result of having her masters degree. Being a grateful person she sometimes felt that she might be over-payed compared to many police and fire personell who risked their lives daily.

The pay cuts DO suck and are a result of of much mismanagement from our wasteful school board and administration. But... like the rest of the work force out there teachers should be grateful for the jobs they have and the benefits they derive in these difficult times.

What I can't figure out is why gumament employees feel like they should be exempt from difficult economic times.

No I don't believe the $2,000 a yr story either. I just rexcently fulfilled a 5th Grade teacher's school supply list and doubt that it cost me more than $35.00. Now I don't know how long that will last her, but if need be, I'll boost her again later in the school yr.

It is painfully obvious that whatever you were paid, if you ever held down a job, was too much.

You are annoying and ignorant about the vast majority of topics you comment on.

The mere fact that you can read my post means a teacher somewhere at sometime gave you the most valuable gift you have ever received from a mortal other than your birth.

I am truly thankful that nurses, doctors, police and fire and certainly all of the wonderful teachers out there have never shared you cynicism and selfishness.

The world needs more teachers. On the other hand a "Bonkers" contributes virtually nothing but discourse and every village has at least one.

And I suspect some villages have more than 1!

Following up on some prior coordination I have been doing with a S. GA farmer, I visited him today and scored a bushel of fresh Butterbeans (from Tennessee), a bushel of Cream (WhiteAcre) peas and some of his personally grown tomatoes. Now beingoriginaly from Eastern NC, I know something about Butterbeans and last yr got mine from a former neighbor there who farms 300 acres of butterbeans and supplies them to the NC State Farmers Market in Raleigh. Of course the proof is in the the taste and that will be be tested in about 30 minutes! Also scored a bushel of Cream Peas (White Acre) and some Wild Caught Savannah White Shrimp. Mighty fine shopping day!

I was and am a "teacher." So I know more than you do about it.

I have taught subjects to ignoramuses and then glory be, they learned it by rote! The smart ones just go along and stare out the window.

I noticed that you never "contribute" as you say, to what you detest here!

I suspect that you are the one who knows little about the subjects for which I try to improve on the quality.

Teachers need to be paid by results--not by what a union or a budget says they all get---the same per year served and by promotion.

Do you have any idea how many brilliant teachers the county could hire if they offered what salary it took to get them here?
Then of course after a fair trial if they don't earn it they would be released quickly without a bunch of meetings and moves.
Someone who could do that hiring would then justify such a salary as our Super gets!

Are you beginning to see why our school system is failing terribly?
Why, we even pay the State Superintendent less than half of what a county Super gets just for the politics of it! Then they have no real authority.

You are too sympathetic to mediocrity!

I am a parent of 4 who are in Fayette schools. I typed this on my Blackberry so you are right, there were errors, but it doesn't change how ridiculous your comment was on supply lists. Parents like me are tired of parents like you.

been reading the paper lately? Yes, the Fayette County Board of Education IS having money problems. Teacher pay cuts mean that we can no longer buy as many of our classroom supplies out of our own pockets as we have in the past. Some of the items which you placed question marks by might be questionable to you, but, when parents send their children to school sneezing and coughing, you will be pleased to know that YOUR child and his/her classmates have tissues and hand sanitizer to use. Water IS available but not soap; I'm not sure why. Students do use dry erase markers nowadays; they save paper, of which the school system always has in very short supply. If the paper sent home by the school demands that you send these items in, you should ask to speak to someone in administration. We are under strict advisement to ask parents to DONATE these items.

Yes I have been reading the paper and speaking with others. This is the REASON for my post/blog. I see that the post/blog worked!! It drew attention, was read and then commented on! NOW, the next step is to realize that we all seem to be on the same side of the issue- THE COUNTY/STATE needs to step up and supply the schools with the needed FUNDS!!
As I have stated in a reply to another poster, It is my belief that teachers "SHOULD NOT BE PAYING OUT OF POCKET" for school materials for the class room. Again it has always been the COUNTY/STATES job!!
Now the basic personal items for my kid/s I pay for. It is the extra stuff being added and told "DO NOT put your childs name on" is whats raising my eyebrow.
Now, responding to your sneezing, coughing comment from sick kids, hand sanitizer for one will not stop the air borne germs. It's going it's going to spread, but that is another time.
Now the dry eraser comment-I walked into the kid/s class rooms the other day for open house and noticed a large box near the Dry Erase boards that were filled with markers and erasers already which you could tell have been used already. Again, I don't see it my part or the teachers to supply the classroom with materials, it is the COUNTY/STATEs job to do that, and again if there is a problem we as parents and teachers should be advising the COUNTY/STATE that we are here to help them fix the problem and if need be help them handle the money/ies.
For the comment on the items that are to be "Donated", the lists we recieved stated "you NEED" to get. One of the teachers stated to me "You have to buy this agenda for your child. Your child has to have it." When I replied to her why couldnt a notebook be used the teacher then stated "Oh,well if you wanted to use a notebook that is fine. You don't need to buy one of these." Honesty has always been my #1 value in life. Either you have it or you do not!
You are correct about speaking with some one in administration, unfortantly they were not concerened with the matter. There are other means as well though!
Also, I commend you on your tact and people skills! We can all make our comments and still not be negative or make personal attacks toward others while doing it. Your reply shows that all though the views, ideas and opinions may not be the same, we can still be adults and remain on professional and friendly grounds.
God Bless you and your family!!

The county office has frozen all money for supplies-teachers didn't get money to buy anything and they can't pay for it out of their pocket because of the ever increasing pay cuts. Alleged teacher is right-the items you question save money by not using so much paper and keep the classroom clean and your child well. Don't slam on the teachers for this-you need to look at the county and state level!

Submitted by Fayette-Man on Tue, 08/11/2009 - 12:48pm.

You are correct! Money has been frozen and a lot of pay cuts are flying around!
Now, about the teachers that have received pay cuts-that has nothing to do with "IT IS NOT THE TEACHERS PLACE TO BUY SCHOOL MATERIALS!!"
That is the COUNTY/STATES place!!
Now for your comment on keeping the kids well, for one Hand Sanitizer does not stop/prevent AIR BORNE germs. It is going to happen!
Some how you and nomagickingdom must of had the same reading class.
No where in my post was any statement about "BASHING" or "SMASHING" teachers. You need to READ, COMPREHEND and then respond.
What you WILL find is, if the schools need help then we that are concerned should be there to help make sure that the COUNTY/STATE is doing what is needed to get the schools the monies needed.
For those of us who are concerned, we should attempt to get on the same team and let the COUNTY/STATE know that we are there to help them do the JOB that they are being PAID to do. If they can not handle the monies or thejob, WE CAN!!
