Resident called 911 from closet

A burglar picked the wrong north Fayette house to target Tuesday morning.

Someone was still home at the house on New Hope Road when the burglar entered the residence, officials said. The homeowner hid in a closet and called 911, emergency dispatchers said.

The first deputy to arrive on the scene saw the suspect carrying items out of the house, said Fayette County Sheriff Wayne Hannah.

Ronnie Bass, of Ashdale Drive, College Park, was arrested at the scene, deputies said. He was charged with burglary, officials said.

The incident occurred just after 10 a.m., when Bass forced his way into the residence, officials said.

Bass’s vehicle matches the description of a vehicle that has been seen near the scene of other burglaries, including one Monday on Banks Road in which a flat screen TV was taken, Hannah said. Other burglaries have been reported in the Wilkins Road area, he added.

Other items in Bass’s possession may link him to other burglaries committed in Fayette County, officials said.

Bass was released from the state prison system in September for a conviction in Fulton County for theft by taking. He had been incarcerated six previous times in Georgia prisons for various theft and burglary charges, including one burglary in Clayton County in which he was sentenced to 14 years for burglary, and after serving six months in March 1989 he committed another burglary in Fulton County less than two months later for which he was convicted and sentenced to another 12 years.

The article said this guy was at one time sentenced to 14 years but only served six months? Then he was caught again for the same thing and only sentenced to 12 years. How much of the 12 years did he serve? I wish I was old enough to be a criminal in the 80's, punishmnet didn't even exist back then. Also, this guy got caught commiting the same crime 7 times. You would think he would have learned how to not get caught by now. Or at least learned his lesson. The article wasn't clear but it sounds like this man served 12 years at one point.

What the heck was this clown doing out of the joint in the first place, with a rap sheet a mile long. Looks like College Park in the house once again being represented to the fullest, come on down. To bad the homeowner was not armed... Should have been some smoke in the city, and a fine end to an illustrious criminal career... GOD BLESS...

son of a...... feeding scum like this is a waste of our tax dollars.

If the criminals would stop leaving this county alive, maybe fewer criminals would dare to come here. Just a thought...

At least you caught the scumball that is a good thing.....it's just a shame that he is still breathing.

Was on my front porch cutting some boards and knew something was up when deputies came tearing up New Hope running lights and no sirens.

I know folks in the Wilkins and Helmer Rd areas that have been hit in the last month or so.

They "came tearing up New Hope running lights and no sirens" for a a very good reason -- they didn't want to tip off the idiot toting off all the homeowner's goods. Only in the child's game Hide n Seek do you shout "Ready or not, Here I come!"
