Am I Intruding?

Phil Whitley's picture

I wound up here by following one of my favorite southern authors - Ronda Rich, who has a "Lifestyles" article and a blog here. I sort of followed her example of writing about nostalgic things... in my case, life in the 1950's Georgia. But since I get few (if any) comments, I don't have a clue if anyone is reading - or worse yet - wondering what the heck I am doing here.

I'm not whining for attention, mind you. I'm just wondering if I'm wasting my time and yours by making the effort!

I like your style, please keep it up. I grew up in the country in south central PA, and the only difference between there and GA is that it was too cold for peanuts or cotton. There were still plenty of "stoop crops" for youngsters to pick though. I was going to comment on the "party line" post, I remember those days, and the folks picking up the phone to listen, and argue. Thanks for your efforts to entertain us.

I appreciate the comment. Too bad about how Georgia got in the news recently. Peanut butter, of all things. Our local grocery even took away the roasted peanuts. Maybe there's more to that story than what we're hearing! Cotton was gone by the time I came along. Dang Boll Weevil...

However, I do thoroughly enjoy your musings. Even after growing up Yankee in the late 40s and 50s I can still relate to most of your topics. I do hope that us “outsiders” are welcome to partake of your Dixie remembrances. Please continue with the trips down memory lane.

I came back here this morning to delete the "whiney" post, but then saw I had responses. I really just wanted to see if anyone was reading. I post on so many blogs that I figured I caould reduce the load if there was no interest.

And I have found country fokes from all over the USA. Some things never change...

Thanks for the reply!

Hey, who you calling country? I’ll have you know my hometown was a metropolis of almost 1800 people. Now I’ll have to admit we didn’t have to go far to be country, but some of us “big city” guys are not comfortable with that country label. We were however, and still are friendly with the county folks.

Wasn't labelling anyone in particular, TinCan. It does pay to have a few "country" friends around... where else could you get those fresh backyard tomatoes?

Seems like you may have taken me seriously. That was all tongue in cheek. Really my hometown was considered country by the slickers in the big city of 40,000 ten miles away. When I first met my city mother-in-law to be and she found out where I grew up her comment was something like, "Oh, out in the country." And I guess if backyard tomatoes, pole beans, radishes, lettuce, sweet corn, egg plant, and more are the measure, it was country.

Intruding? Absolutely not! I enjoy reading everything you write. I was born in Harris County. (Pine Mountain) Does C Street sound familiar to you? Years ago my uncle owned a small country store there. I can share more, don't have the time now.

Keep writing!

Hey, Tug,
C street? You bet! King's Gap, the "hairpin" curve...

I lived on D St. near the bridge, about a mile from the Clegg mansion. You can find my email address on my website linked below!

There is no intrusion on this site, unless you're selling something, I enjoy your pieces, I just can't respond to everything on here. Keep it coming.

Phil, I review this site daily, and I don't recall seeing any of your posts. No such thing as intrusion. I don't share your positive view of the Rich lady, I think she's a self-centered lonely person who's best friend is her computer. I am a true southern born person from rural North Carolina and should I choose, I could relate many tales of truth from such a heritage---but to what purpose? Regardless, you do what you think is right, which in the end is all that's important.

I appreciate the reply. I guess it pays to be a little whiney sometimes! LOL - I really didn't mean it that way.

Thanks, Hutch, I was just having a bad night... LOL. The blog headers get scrolled down so fast here that it makes it difficult to keep up. I wish there were email alerts to let us know when there has been a reply to a blog we're participating in.

Again, thanks!
