Delta Northwest and 30,000 employess getting the ax

promprinces's picture

Can anyone bring me up to speed as to the Delta-Northwest merger? I understand it went sour and that is part of the reason, aside from gas, that the 30,000 employee are being offered early retirement and packages.

Some people really have a problem with this. They are looking to cut back up to 2,000 jobs. Where did you get the idea that 30K were "getting the ax"?

First of all, I am not a Delta employee and no one in my family is employed by Delta. But here is how I understand what happened.... Union rules say that in a merger, no one should have a windfall at the expense of another. Delta's pilots offered NW's pilots a deal that would have EVERYONE keep their exact "percentile rank" in seniority. So if pilot at NW had 77% seniority, after the merger he would still have 77% seniority. Likewise, if a Delta pilot had 65% seniority, that is what he would have after the merger. No one gains or loses. NW, however, wanted date-of-hire seniority, which would mean many of their pilots would GAIN in seniority ranking and many Delta pilots would lose ranking. Sounds to me that NW pilots were being greedy (especially considering that the merger would also give them an instant pay raise and increase in benefits, if my information is correct) and Delta pilots were just trying to preserve what they currently have.

Yes, I agree, pilots, especially ones with decent seniority, have a "cush" life. But to be honest, I want the man or woman at the controls of the large, fuel-laden, hunk of flying steel I may be flying in to be very happy, well-rested, and alert! I don't want to put my life in the hands of a disgruntled, tired, stressed-out pilot! But that's just my opinion.... (FYI - I like happy, well-rested doctors & nurses, too!).

I don't understand why there is so much animosity directed at pilots. They trained a long time to earn the right to fly a plane (many through military service, others had to pay their way through pilot training). Anybody can ring up orders at McDonald's, but not everyone can fly a plane. What's with the anger towards pilots?

You understand, and stated, the seniority problem correctly. The NW pilots were just posturing for a better deal.

You have to understand the mentality of some of these back-woods 'thinkers' down here... It isn't animosity, it is jealousy over that "cush" pilot life.

I think "pilot envy" is a bit more universal. As far as I'm concerned, they earn every penny they make. Nonetheless, it's fun to carp about the atypical $300K pilot.

I recently flew a Delta Connection flight to a very small town on a regional jet. I sat next to a deadheading (I think that's the term) co-pilot fresh out of Embry Riddle Aeronautical university. In the course of conversation he mentioned that he made $21,000 per YEAR.

I remember thinking "I am putting my life in the hands of some twenty something making $21K a YEAR"? Shocked

On the flip side of the equation, I recently had lunch with a woman who had very senior flight attendant status with Delta (her seniority was like in the double digits, meaning out of all the thousands of flight attendants she was 50th overall in seniority for the company). Life is VERY comfortable when you reach that rarified air, but it doesn't last very long as most of those attendants become eligible for retirement shortly thereafter.

Go get the training and flight time and become an airline pilot! If anyone thinks they are overpaid, don't work long enough hours, etc., go for it, it's a free country. You can be one of those "overpaid, rich" pilots too. Stop whining and sitting on your sofa rotting away and take decisive action in your life! TESTIFY!

I've got to agree with you that whenever I've flown with a younger pilot on a non-major airline or in another country on a glorified crop-duster that I've thought the same "I'm putting my life in the hands of a guy making minimum wage.":) I certainly don't begrudge an airline pilot or anyone else getting paid as much as the marketplace will bear for their labor.I really don't understand why anyone else would envy and resent another for doing well, but I guess that's the unseemly side of human nature for some.

Sorry no chest thumping.

Your tirades on here remind me of a kids book about crosspatch the lion. He was in a kids petting zoo. He growled everytime someone came near him, soon none of the kids would go near his cage and pet him. He realized he had to be nice. Then the crowds of kids came back.

Have a good weekend.

If you step back and look at the big picture, you'll see that the tirade happened when I made two posts yesterday, one regarding 'trailer park' mentality, and the possiblity of Jesus being gay. Then the you-know-what hit the fan. I stood back and watched the firestorm and it was actually very entertaining. From reading how Tug and Jane wanted to rip my hair out, and others telling me to get the hell out and move to Atlanta.... well, the tirade wasn't on MY part.

As I mentioned before, I've lost respect for the blog, obviously, after I asked for a truce on the vicious posting, and denise pretty much laughed in my face. Git and Sniffles kept at it, and the mayhem continued, which was really the last straw for me. There are so many important issues facing our country right now and this blog has failed to take on a form of dialogue that is healthy and constructive towards building cohesion or consensus among us. The occasional coffee gatherings have helped, however, once we resume our positions on the blog, the insanity continues. It's not for me.

My stomach started to take a turn several weeks ago with the bpr/lilly incident and my view of the blog, as being a positive forum for discourse, has never recovered actually. This was the beginning of the end for me wanting to participate, really. It was sickening to me what she did, and to many others. And the negativity on here continues down the same course.

Like Jeffc mentioned, I've also found some new blogs to converse on, blogs that are monitored and where trolls and flame throwing, and 'sockpuppets' (multiple identities) are banned immediately. I can actually have a political or religious discussion with another blogger, without it resulting in mud-slinging! Very refreshing. I'll check in here on occasion but I'll take my deeply held beliefs and opinions, to another forum. I'm sure there are several on here who will appreciate the absence of my liberal, non-religious views anyway.

Peace.

I am quite a nice person. Having said that, I will not tolerate personal attacks aimed at me, which the vulgarian Dense Conner as well as the Sissy have learned to their dismay.

I realize in your view of the world, the centrists and liberals should stand idly by and "turn the other cheek" while certain conservatives heap constant abuse and personal attacks on those they disagree with.

Not going to happen, friend.

If it's any consolation, Silence, I learned yesterday that there actually is a limit to Dense Conner's vileness. She began to lecture women who have had miscarriages on how they should feel (typical of Dense) and got smacked around pretty thoroughly by women who'd actually suffered one. She actually backed down from her vile comments, something I did not think she was capable of. So perhaps there is hope for this board yet.

You will also note that your so-called "nice man" the Sissy began the nastiness...far from "returning" any nastiness, he initiated. I fight fire with fire, a lesson the Sissy needs reinforcing. I am simply educating the Sissy that his actions have consequences.

If the vulgarian and the sissy want a rhetorical truce, I'm game. But there's no way I'm going to initiate a truce unilaterally.

Other than a few other bloggers on here, I have seen little in the way of tolerance and respect in this forum or in Fayette County for that matter for people with views that are counter to their own.

And most recently, the most vicious posters on here have shown their extreme racism, sexism, and religious-political-social intolerance, turning this blog into a cesspool of words. I'm just telling it as I see it, and pointing out the obvious.

I was talking about the state(ATS), not the county. So I'm to assume you only have respect for the people who echo your views? You can base all that on just the few posters on this site? If I remember right it was said just recently on the citizen that there are about 106,000 people in this county and you'll base your opinion on the few people who blog on the citizen. Well so be it, I would have thought it had to start somewhere but I guess I'm wrong again. If you dislike this area so much why in the world do you live here?

I enjoy civil discourse with others with opposing opinions. However, this blog has proven NOT to be the forum in which to conduct any form of civil discourse with those with opposite views.

I asked denise and git the other night to have a truce on hateful and personal posts only to find denise posting her 'nasties' again the next morning. This blog has become like the 'Wild West' where personal attacks will no doubt continue, as Cal doesn't seem to be policing the content very well or he just doesn't care.

When a person (denise) infers to another woman that it is best to let a dead fetus rot inside of her uterus, instead of taking proper medical steps to have it removed, surgically with a D&C (nice word for abortion), any amount of respect I had for her, that same group of nasty posters, and this blog have come to an abrupt end.

An example of your "civil" discourse posted just 3 hours before your post to Hutch:

ATLtoPTC - good points...

You have to understand the mentality of some of these back-woods 'thinkers' down here... It isn't animosity, it is jealousy over that "cush" pilot life.

Some of these posters live in trailer parks - yeehaw! They're just angry with their own lives.

BTW, exactly WHICH POSTERS are you talking about? Puzzled

-------------------

About that "truce" you proposed, which called for only Git & Denise to stop the "nasties," as you call them (unconditional surrender as I see it)...

That was after you posted, "Git....well, he continues to be a turd, of course."

And holy cow git... (You should know that he's not Hindu. Eye-wink)

Gosh Git!? Got the nasties tonight, or what?

I guess this blog is a better place for you to vent then [sic] takin' it out on the wife and kiddies. Please don't be kickin' your dog tonight too, okay... Take your chill pill and go to bed.

That wouldn't be one of those stereotypes that you like to talk about, would it?

-------------------

Then there's the "truce" you offered me with the the 10+ "personal attacks," including calling me a "flame throwing troll" and perverting my post, as you did again today, about "proper medical steps," although you give no support for your claim. You choose inflammatory language ("best to let a dead fetus rot inside of her uterus"), which reveals your argument is based on your emotions and prejudices (denigrating the South again, too) rather than reason and FACTS.

Expectant management (the correct medical terminology) is one of 3 options, and the one that often has a lower rate of complications. Once the fetus dies, it and the placenta degenerate (shrink in size) and one option is to wait for a miscarriage to occur. That is a "proper medical step," whether you like it or not.

-------------------

You've proclaimed more than once that you would no longer "waste your time" addressing me, but as you often do, you then attack me in a post to someone else (when I wasn't online) and had made no comment to you. I seriously doubt your being "serious" about stopping "vicious posting." Seriously.

Dense, I see you are still squealing about being called on the carpet regarding your inappropriate commentary in the Walmart miscarriage thread. People were discussing the issue largely in an adult manner until you showed up.

Then Dense had to indulge her pathetic need to be the center of attention. "Lookee me! Lookee ME! I googled 'gynecology'!" and Voila! Enter Dense Conner, instant Google Gynecologist. You added your trademark cut and paste, this time about how dead fetuses should be left to rot in the womb (and how women should feel about this), rubbed your hands together in glee, and waited for the inevitable fawning replies from your tiny but vocal band of sycophants.

Didn't quite work out for you this time, did it, Dense?

It seems that women who'd actually HAD miscarriages took great offense to being told by the likes of you how they "should" feel.

Something went terribly wrong this time, didn't it, "Doctor"?

You tried rationalizing your commentary but people wouldn't come around to your position that your inappropriate behavior was to be valued and treasured! Your "friends" deserted you! And poor little Dense, the needy girl who thought she was oh-so-smart...actually had to apologize for her insensitive boorish remarks.

How that must have hurt!

Perhaps in the future, "Doctor", you should stick to subjects you have first hand experience with! Mental Illness comes to mind.

Or perhaps you should give up your "menstrual show" altogether and go back to your tried and true race-baiting "minstrel show" (Does the phrase "Yassuh, Massah Hack!" ring any bells?). With all your whining about "the deaths you've experienced", you could add the old spiritual "Nobody Knows De Trubble I Seen" to your act as well! (Since we all know that only YOU have experienced the death of a friend or family member in this life).

How someone can be filled with so much hate ... Sad

In the situation that $niff's referring to, a D&E (dilation and evacuation or extraction) would likely have been required because it happened during the second trimester (13-27 weeks gestational age / months 4-6). Forceps are used to crush the skull and dismember the body of the fetus, which is removed piece by piece and then reassembled to ensure that the entire body is removed. A distasteful procedure, even if the baby has died, that doctors who deliver babies may want to avoid if there is another way. Understandable to me, especially if expectant management usually has fewer complications. But, Americans are conditioned to demand instant solutions and doctors just to do something (such as antibiotics for viral infections -- colds). Then there's the profit motive. A miscarriage isn't easy, no matter how it happens.

Did you know that the NAF [National Abortion Federation (providers and financial profiteers)] realized that there was an "emerging crisis in abortion service delivery" since fewer doctors were choosing to perform abortions. Too many "providers" were old and getting older (50 years or older) with too few young recruits willing to volunteer. NAF's solution? All ob-gyn residency programs must require abortion techniques as a standard part of training. NAF developed the curriculum, including "A Values Clarification Guide for Health Professionals" since too many residents were not voluntarily choosing to include the training. Congress adopted the Coats Amendment as a remedy for NAF's "choice."

Where has the most intense lobbying been done (for "increased abortion training opportunities")? New York (because of the large number of training hospitals) and California, in case you couldn't guess. National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League (NARAL) is one of the main lobbyists.

"New York is the nation's capital of abortion. The state, one of a minority that fund abortions for Medicaid recipients, has none of the restrictions, such as parental notification laws, that hamper access in many states. In 2004, 40 percent of pregnancies in the city ended in abortion (the estimated national average is 24 percent)." Sad No wonder Hillary moved to NY.

“Abortion Crisis as Doctors Refuse to Perform Surgery”

Britain is facing an abortion crisis because an unprecedented number of doctors are refusing to be involved in carrying out the procedure.

Distaste at performing terminations combined with ethical and religious convictions has led to a big increase in "conscientious objectors" who request exemption from the task. A key factor is what specialists call "the dinner party test." Gynaecologists who specialise in fertility treatment creating babies for childless couples are almost universally revered - but no one boasts of being an abortionist.

In the U.S., where abortion is more politicised, abortionists are made to seem "worthwhile and heroic." But in Britain it is regarded as low status and unglamorous.

"There is an ethos that people go into medicine to save lives and look after people.... It is difficult and upsetting work and it is done with obvious reticence. We are seeing more doctors who are reluctant to be involved in the process and this is happening in the context of growing demand [because abortion has come to be just another birth control method, which doctors resent]."

"You get no thanks for performing abortions; you get spat on. Who admits to friends at a dinner party that they are an abortionist?"

"The worst are colleagues - they can be overtly rude." [Maybe that's because they know the truth about abortion.]

“Medically, abortion really isn't a popular thing to do, it is not a very technical or demanding operation and it's actually quite disheartening."

"There's no handshakes or slaps on the backs afterwards, or the sense that you've done something great for someone. The best you can hope for is sense of relief that it is over.” [What a way to live life. There isn't nearly as much financial incentive in the U.K., with socialized medicine, as in the U.S., and no NARAL NAGS to drum up recruitment and spread propaganda.]

Dr. Ted: I'm a trauma center surgeon. I piece broken bodies back together.

Dr. Sue: I practice at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta saving the lives of children.

Dr. Right: I deliver babies and specialize in the life saving techniques utilized for pre-mature babies.

Dr. Left: Uhh.... I burn unborn babies in order to kill them and then eradicate them from it's mother's womb. If the baby is old enough, I poke a hole in it's head and suck it's brain out so the eviction process will be more comforting to the babies mother.

You say "I asked denise and git the other night to have a truce on hateful and personal posts only to find denise posting her 'nasties' again the next morning."

You should lead by example for an extended period of time before you try to hold Git and Denise accountable to your demands and wishes. Please don't take this personally but you lack any credibility in demanding that your opponents behave in a civilized manner. You have not been a nice person on this forum. Git is a funny and nice person. I think he only feeds off of the ugliness of you and that other nasty man.

If you happen to read the posts from that night, you will see that the personal attacks were being escalated on both sides, to a point of violence. If Cal won't step in to stop the personal attacks then someone has to try and diffuse the situation - don't you think?

I have a very difficult time keeping the discussion on an even keel. It is not that I want to get into personal diatribes with others here...it is that I have a difficult time with people who do not realize that there are actually two valid sides to most arguments. I can't even use an example here because it would start an entire "flame" war just trying to cite an example.

I did fall into a personal exchange with one person here because that person chose to question my character and the sincerity of my beliefs. When the discussion turns personal, I generally just sort of disappear into the woodwork. The problem with that strategy is that one leaves the "other side" with the ability to gloat over "victory". We are damned if we stand up for ourselves and we are ridiculed if we don't.

I don't know the answer. I do know that there are those who appeal to reason to prevail in discussions and there are those who appeal to emotion to prevail and these two types have a very difficult time actually communicating with each other. And they both appear here in the "blogs" personified by one person or another. All I can offer is...keep the faith.

"Which is more lethal, waterboarding, or Denise's deluge of cut and paste?"

“river already said that the tornadoes were sent to rid Atlanta of gays (I think "queers" was the term he used).”

[Totally unprovoked and not all funny]

Yardman “applauds” Sniffles’ statements:
“In short, I cannot think of any particular tenet of conservatism that I agree with” and “As a Christian, I find the basic tenets of conservatism to be incompatible with Christianity.”

[Posted under the thread about district voting, which, as vice chair of FayCo Dems, you whole-heartedly support]

What I notice, sniff...
is the way Denise always slips away when the discussion gets down to factual information that she cannot refute with invective and opinion. Only to appear later as if the entire thing never happened.

[Again, totally unprovoked since my post was to $niffy. BTW, you never did explain what in the world you were talking about. Puzzled ]

Yardman to Main Stream:
As for Denise, her credibility has been severely compromised since she has not been able to justify her beliefs with the "Golden Rule" she so devoutly espouses.

[This is one of your replies to my post AF A-10 "Hack" -- MARTA & Crime, after accusing me of "inundating" you with statistics (another charge unexplained) and not "stick[ing] to the subject." (Hack & others mentioned crime; so that was "the subject.")] Still waiting for those answers.....

Regarding your comment on personal attacks and turning the other cheek:

"The problem with that strategy is that one leaves the "other side" with the ability to gloat over "victory". We are damned if we stand up for ourselves and we are ridiculed if we don't."

I totally agree. That is the reason this blog needs to be monitored so the dialogue does not escalate to the point of initiating personal attacks on another blogger. This blog is not monitored, like others are, and it should be if it is going to survive. But again, maybe Cal doesn't have the time or believe that a monitor is important.

When you have a vocal blog community like this, discussing passionate issues such as politics, religion and social matters, it becomes necessary to install a monitor of some kind. Otherwise, we have a blog community as we do now.

My point was that if you desire a truce and a lessening of hostilities on this forum you should lead the way. I voiced a thought that because of your continuous history of hostility on this forum that you should lead in being civil and accepting. It was a valid suggestion. Instead you state you could care less what I think about your credibility and call me ilk. Then you turn the tables on me and state that I have no credibility because of the company I keep. The company that I keep or read is you and the rest of the bloggers.

If you want change then let it begin with you and that way you can lead by example and show who is the bigger person here over Mrs. Conner and Mr. Git. Please don't demand something from others that maybe you are unwilling to do yourself. As an educator, I think this should be a very elementary principle to follow. AJC article on Delta

Submitted by boxwing on Tue, 03/18/2008 - 8:37pm.

Let's not go over the deep end here. Delta is looking to do about a 5% reduction in force overall (about 2,000 to 3,000 positions) to offset the impact of approximately $900M in increased fuel costs in 2008 over 2007.

One way to accomplish a work force reduction with minimal personal impact is to offer the early retirement option. It happens that roughly half the workforce (the 30,000 number) is eligible for the package. If approximately 1 in 10 eligible employees take the package, then Delta will meet the 5% work reduction target and avoid any non-voluntary layoffs. This is a sane and fair way to approach the issue.

This information is gathered from public sources. I am an aviation consultant and not a Delta employee, so please do not treat this information as "official".
