Comcast Cable? Close Caption

Comcast has not provided close caption on any of the Encore channels since 10/16 ; now it has stopped on Lifetime
and also on LMN. It was not shown on CNN
in over two weeks; did return Oct 24, is not showing Close Caption again. Is any
one else having this problem? (in Fayetteville) I'm deaf; close caption was coming in on these channels til recently.
I receive it on most channels. I find
also their outside cable boxes that are for homes are broken cable connections
are bare and many cables are not buried;
they run across a person's lawn.
When these companies get too big and have
no competition they forget about good service.

I too am sorely dissatisfied with their service and when one calls to complain, one is usually met with same response from their "customer service"- "we will look into that and thank you for your business".
The problem is there is no competition here (in Peachtree City) for them to worry about losing "my business" too! A side from Direct TV or Satellite-both unfortunately outside of the budget for many households, Comcast is not concerned about competition and as a result they are overly confident that they will not lose enough business to hurt their bottom line.

Both Fayetteville (if they've contracted only with Comcast) and Peachtree City need to review their decision to have one cable company monopolize the industry in this area.

Those in Fayetteville and Peachtree that have this control need
to change their rules if other cable companies can come into these
cities/towns. Otherwise we need to notify the FCC which I intend
to do; as I feel I've given Comcast enough time to either fix the
problem or have the courtesy to call me as to why they can't.
If you use close caption you'll notice many of the movies that
were produced after 1993 are mostly close captioned, and it's
not being programmed to TV's that have enabled close caption.
Many older movies and programs now are in close caption.
For those of you who use close caption all TV's made after 1993
13 inch screens and larger have the close caption equipment
installed; no additional box is necessary; FCC has rules
that require a certain percentage of programs to be aired in close caption; each year the percentage has increased; by year
2010 all programs are to be aired in Close Caption.
This has been a long and hard fight for the hearing impaired;
think of the fight the blind have had to endure.

Unfortunately we are all stuck with either Comcast or Satellite. The hope is IPTV, which is getting closer by the day. Which day I don't know. I do know that AT&T is ramping up to in a big way to upgrade the infrastructure required for the IPTV roll-out. Once IPTV is available the provider options should increase tremendously in the coming years.

I feel you pain. In February it will have been 3 years since I 'had enough' of their garbage. Boy, I sure do miss the History Channel and not being able to watch the NCAA Football games, not to mention the World Series. But, I guess I'm showing them. I truly suspect that Comcast's days are surely numbered. At least in their present form.

OK, I've read all the comments from my original post about
Close Caption; now perhaps GITREAL or TEETAW can tell
me why Comcast within the past two and half weeks is unable
to repair their Close Caption problem on the Encore, Lifetime, History, channels;
CNN (now is back or was) a few other channels whose programs
all come in close caption. I'm getting too old to wait around for
what is suppose to come in the next 5 or 10 years; the way
things are going in this world ..we may very well all be gone
by way of nuclear power. I realize this is a minor thing compared
to our water problem; but blogs were created for complainers, right?
Thanks for all of the technology info.

You're going to need a cable connection to take advantage of IPTV whenever it becomes available unless you will be watching on one tv in your house and don't mind slow speeds on your computer simultaniously. IPTV still needs an internet service provider, and comcast is the only quick choice in town.
The only REAL hope for Peachtree City fast access without suffering the dreaded Comcast is Verizon FIOS, which may or may not occur this decade, as they are slowly wiring cities around the country. Until then, Comcast won't have any real competition (ADSL is SLOW and will never be able to match cable speeds), and will never be forced to provide cheap, easy, reliable, good service. They know that they have tons of time before any real provider is here to compete and thus the crappy service.
So enjoy it because its going to be around for a while. Or enjoy your slow ADSL which requires a land line.

I don't have alot of problems w/ Comcast, other than I wake up on some mornings & my internet is down but even that has gotten better in the last 2 mos.
My question is this.... I can walk up to a white pipe in the ground and it is marked "Newnan Utilities Fiber Optic Cable" not 500' from my place. I see their trucks around town sometime. I have been told that they provide service to city hall and businesses in the industrial park. Is this true?

I've read where NU wants to sell the cable business because they can't afford to grow it it, so they may not want to dual wire PTC.

I would like a choice and I had NU when I lived in Newnan 10 yrs ago and was happy w/ all their services.

Fiber in Georgia is almost exclusively limited to businesses that can afford it because no big company has come into our state to wire it up and make it affordable for everyone. So unless you feel like paying a couple hundred bucks a month for internet, it will be a while.

I can show you the white pipe in the ground and what it says.
I have seen Newnan Utl Trucks around city hall & I have seen them down on Dividend. It is not that far from Thomas Crossroads to here.

Why give Comcast a "franchise?" Why is the coucil going backwards & giving us ONE trash provider? I know another blog topic, but I am happy w/ my provider... Robertson / AllSouth.

All the PTC City buildings are connected by NU fiber and have been for about 9 years. NU also has fiber running into parts of the industrial park and a few businesses around Westpark.

The entire city itself doesn't have fiber in the ground to the point that NU could flick a switch a turn everyone on to NU service....it would take a lot of digging to get fiber throughout the city, but you're right, there is some there presently.

I still can't forget about that clogged drain I had last week. That dog-gone George Bush. BTW... When are the Republicans going to come and edge my lawn and spread my pine straw. You know... If they don't stop dropping those leaves, acorns and hickory nuts all over my house and driveway I'm going to vote them out of office.

This from the guy who said cell phones would never catch on and wireless internest service is a technological impossibility. Hang on TeeTaw... in the very near future your TV lifestyle is going to be turned upside down.

I supply to that industry, attend the trade shows, know folks in-the-know at AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, Time Warner, and many of the contractors and manufacturers that are engineering and developing this technology. IPTV is bumpy at the moment, however, these companies aren't investing hundreds of millions of dollars at this very moment to just to annoy Comcast. Like Ford is to the automobile industry, Comcast is to the telecommunications / cable industry.

I can't wait.

The Republicans line was a bit tongue in cheek, glad you lolled at it Smiling

When you say the very near future, thats only if you consider the very near future between 5 and 10 years. When you say IPTV is bumpy, thats true, but you're still going to need a fat pipe to download hi-def format broadcasting over the net and ADSL can't really supply it. So we wait.

The only other real service provider on the horizon is if anyone does something with that wireless spectrum the FCC is auctioning off, but I doubt it will be able to match cable or fiber, and will be comparable to DSL.

The automobile industry metaphor doesn't really work because you can get a Ford car to any state, if only it would be that easy to deliver fiber optics.

It will be no time soon before we get an alternative. I would save your optimism and just bite the bullet and get Comcast if you want to be able to watch TV in the next decade. But then... who really watches TV, anyway..

No History Channel, no PBS, no NCAA games, no world series. Is this your only contact to the outside world?
