Terrorism and gay rights

The bright scholars on capitol hill have come up with a new one, senate Democrats and some Reps have attached hate crimes legislation to the massive bill funding the Defense Department and the Iraq war. Here are some of the excerpts:

“Writing violent attacks on gays into federal hate crime laws is related to the war because both are strikes against terrorism, according to a Republican senator and other supporters of the measure”. Say what????

"We simply cannot tolerate violence against our own citizens simply because of their differences," said Sen. Gordon Smith, R-Ore., who is sponsoring the legislation with Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass. "We cannot fight terror abroad and accept terror at home."

That's a stretch, not to mention a heavy-handed maneuver that "hijacks" a bill that includes a pay increase for troops in wartime, said Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas.

"I think it's shameful we're changing the subject to take care of special interest legislation at a time like this," Cornyn said on the Senate floor.

I sure hate to tell our sons and daughters fighting the war that they cannot receive a pay raise and new equipment because we have to make sure no one picks on Billy and Bob while they are holding hands walking down the street. I am for treating everyone equally, but this legislation should not be attached to a defense spending bill!

I hear you; pork barrel politics in itself is a sport.
It must be that 'what about me?" syndrome.

You wrote, "I sure hate to tell our sons and daughters fighting the war that they cannot receive a pay raise ..."

You don't have to tell our troops any such thing. As long as President Bush signs the bill into law there's no problem at all. Of course, if W. wants to put his hatred of gays above his love for the troops, that's his prerogative.

Including this "hate thought" legislation in an appropriations bill is a sneaky trick! This isn't about loving or hating homosexuals. It is about giving them special rights! What is wrong with their being treated the same as everyone else? Why should Americans give up freedom of speech and thought for "special" rights for a group of people who have chosen a deviant lifestyle?

The erosion of family values, the lack of morals and self respect; we have all succumbed to the generations of rights for everyone on their own terms regardless of the agenda. As our society continues to decay, our family structure will continue to come under attack. Our leaders, black or white, republican or democrat, have shown us that the path of least resistance is easier to take than to stand up to what you believe in.

SAD!
