I think the BOE is just warming everyone up to year long school. I say just make the change and get it over with. Right now you have parents scrambling to find care for their children during all of their breaks. With the schedule changing year to year, it makes it hard for people to plan for days off. Some people have to setup their vacation a year in advance. Just go ahead and make the change. Everyone will be mad for a year or two. They will deal with it. With all the gradual changes, everyone will be mad for a decade.

It's quite obvious that Georgia's local school boards, including ours, do not see the citizens who elected them as their constituency. Both citizens generally and families with school-aged children prefer normal summer breaks--the same breaks still afforded to children in areas of the country where student achievement is higher than it is here in Georgia. But teachers prefer the school-in-August/ski-vacation-in-February schedule we have in place now, and the board members are scared to cross them. So the heat index is 110, and our kids are heading back to the classroom. Madness!

Funny, I know a lot of teachers and not one that I know has taken off for a ski trip in Febuary and the last I heard the schools were air conditioned so what does a heat index have to do with it? My Senior year in high school started on the 20th or so of August in 1974 so it hasn't changed that much in 33 years. Get over it or vote for someone else.

I am a graduate of Fayette County High School, and I remember that in grammar school and high school, when we wanted air, we opened a window. LOL

I went to East Coweta (the old campus) when it was grades 1 thru 12.

I went to Newnan and even went to summer school in '65 (Civics before 9th grade), '66 (ALG because I didn't git it the 1st time & driver's ed) & no we didn't have no stinkin' air conditioning.

I think when I was at UGA in '70 there were un-a/c'd classes. I know Crewell (girl's) dorm wasn't. All the old dorms that weren't used in the summer weren't.

Gawd, we were a hardy lot.

If mine had not graduated (and we are all done), I don't know if I would be entirely happy with the new school calendar. I am sure those in the industry that run summer camps are not either.

and it was hot when folks moved in in late August. I know this because I was at Russell Hall which had AC.

We had AC at Lake Harbin (Now called McGarrah) Elementary in Morrow in the late 60's when I started.

I'm at a loss as to why anyone cares about 70s air conditioning in schools!!
Heck. I remember oil lamps and buckets of water from a pump!

There was only one high school back then, FCHS, new and top of the line after the old one burned. Brooks, Tyrone and Kenwood came to FCHS after 6th grade. There was NO Peachtree City.

I was lucky in that I opened a couple of new schools when I was a kid, but also went to a couple that were beyond bad.

You say, "My Senior year in high school started on the 20th or so of August in 1974 . . " This certainly illustrates my point that going back to school in the summertime has no evident effect on achievement.
