Seedings for state playoffs set, begin next week

Boasting the top ranking in AAAA in Georgia and a number two ranking in the nation, according to a recent National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll, the McIntosh Chiefs varsity boys soccer team completed their undefeated run through region play on Monday with a 5-1 win over Fayette County. Leo Gutierrez and Allen Stein both scored in the first half, while Cameron Black, Jad Sheikali and Joaquin Reyes scored in the second half. Fayette’s goal was scored by Sean Pietromonaco.

The win gives McIntosh (15-0-2, 8-0 region) the region title and the top seed heading into the state playoffs. They will wrap up the regular season with a home game against Pace (7-4) on Friday.

The second seed in region 2-AAAA is Starr’s Mill (10-2-3, 7-1). The Panthers, ranked third in AAAA, beat Woodward Academy 5-1 on Friday. Sam Martin had a goal and two assists in the win, while Gray Phelps, Jesy Phelps, Chris Capati and Nick Fevella each scored one goal. Danny Hojaij had an assist. Starr’s Mill finishes their regular season with a home game against Milton tomorrow at 7:45 p.m. and an away game at Brookwood tomorrow at 6 p.m.

Whitewater’s boys (11-5, 5-2), ranked sixth in AAAA, are the third seed out of 2-AAAA. The Wildcats lost 1-0 to the fifth ranked St. Pius team on Friday and beat Jonesboro 4-0 on Monday. They will play at Parkview tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. and will play at Westminster at 7:30 p.m on Friday.

Fayette County’s boys (9-6-1, 5-3) are the fourth seed from the region. They will play at Duluth at 8 p.m on Friday.

On the girls’ side, things changed rapidly with Starr’s Mill’s loss in shootout to Woodward Academy on Friday. For the Lady Panthers, Laura McCalla had a goal, Carlie Banks added a goal and an assist and Katrina Frost had an assist.

The loss gave McIntosh, Starr’s Mill and Whitewater the same region record, 5-2, and so tiebreakers had to be used to determine the seeding. The tiebreaker between the three teams came down to goals against between the three teams. Starr’s Mill had three goals against and was fourth. McIntosh and Whitewater had two goals against and McIntosh beat Whitewater head to head to capture the second seed.

McIntosh (9-7, 5-2) is second. They beat the Lady Tigers 7-0 on Monday. Goals were scored by K.C. Hewitt (2), Tawny Moffatt, Amanda Cisko, Olivia Tucker, Kate Marnock and Meghan O’Rourke. After the game Coach Marcia Clark stated that their regular season record is of little consequence and that they felt they could win on any given night.

The Lady Chiefs, ranked third in AAAA, will play at Harrison tonight at 5:30 p.m. and will host Blessed Trinity on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Whitewater’s girls (9-5-1, 5-2), ranked fourth in AAAA and the third seed from region 2-AAAA, beat the seventh ranked St. Pius team 3-2 on Friday. Erin Emerson scored all three goals and Brittany Vining had two assists. Coach Heather Allen stated that Katie Schwartz and Morganne Grimes both played well on defense, while Holly Crawford played well on offense.

“I was very pleased with the way we played against St. Pius,” said Allen. “We’re playing well right now and have a very tough three games left this week which is good practive to get us ready for the playoffs next week.”

Whitewater lost to Harrison 3-0 on Monday. They will play at Parkview on Thursday and at Westminster on Friday. Both games are scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

Starr’s Mill (9-3-1, 5-2), ranked sixth in AAAA, is the fourth seed. They will close out the season with a home game against Milton tomorrow at 5:45 p.m. and will play at Brookwood at 8 p.m. on Friday.

In AAA, Sandy Creek’s boys defeated Cass last Friday 4-0. Harry Lee and Kyle Dennis each scored two goals. Coach Stephane Allagnon stated that Garrett Lee played well, assisting on several of the goals, Jerry Riet did a good job of moving the ball up the field, and goalkeeper Tyler Wright also did a fantastic job.

“All of my players did a great job that night,” said Allagnon. “I am very proud of them, especially since it was our senior night.”
The boys beat Villa Rica on Monday 5-3. Lee had two goals and Harper, Riet and Dennis all scored one goal.

The Lady Patriots beat Cass 4-2with goals scored by Ally Treat (2), Linda Lehman and Jaimie Little.

“It was a team effort,” said Coach Silvia Riet, who gave extra praise to Little who also had an assist in the win.

The girls followed that win with a 6-3 win over Villa Rica on Monday. Treat scored two goals and Little, Lehman, Savanna Woody and Dana Morrison each had one goal. Morrison also had three assists in the win.

Sandy Creek closed out their season with games at Central, Carrollton last night and both will play in the state playoffs next week.
Our Lady of Mercy is off this week but the boys, the fourth seed in 1-AA/A, will open the state playoffs on the road next week.

The AAAA girls will start the playoffs on Tuesday, Apr. 24 and the boys will play on Wednesday, Apr. 25. The AAA girls will open the playoffs on Thursday, Apr. 26 and the boys will play on Friday, Apr. 27. The AA/A boys will also play on Friday, Apr. 27.
