Flat Rock A.M.E. Church in Fayettville, in conjunction with Educational Talent Search of Clark Atlanta University, will host a gospel concert Saturday, April 28, from 7-9 p.m. at the Villages Amphitheater in Fayetteville, featuring nationally known gospel singer, Helen Baylor, along with local talent. The purpose of the concert is to raise funds for a new ministry, “Seniors in Need,” which includes needs not only of senior citizens, but seniors in high school.

The event is being called, “The First Annual Seniors in Need Gospel Extravaganza.” Admission is $20 per person and two canned items. Canned goods will be donated to a local nonprofit organization and the proceeds from the concert will be divided between the Flat Rock A.M.E. Seniors in Need program and the Clark Atlanta University Educational Talent Search program.

A free matinee performance from 2-4 p.m. Saturday will be held for senior citizens only, followed by the paid performance at 7 p.m. that evening.

How and why did this all come about? The Rev. Edward Johnson, pastor of Flat Rock A.M.E., explains:

“In an effort to bring the community together through an outreach ministry, Flat Rock A.M.E. Church and Clark Atlanta University Educational Talent Search are reaching out to our senior citizens and seniors in high school who are in need of assistance. We have started a ministry affectionately called ‘Seniors In Need.’ The acronym S.I.N. is very appropriate because we feel it is a sin to have any senior in need.”

Johnson adds that many senior citizens must make challenging decisions about whether or not they can afford food or medication or even pay their utility bills.

“Too often, high school seniors must decide not to go to college because they and their families lack financial support,” he said. “S.I.N. is designed to eliminate some of these heart wrenching, and sometimes life altering, difficult decisions.”

Some proceeds from this event are earmarked for the senior citizens in the Fayette County community and some selected high school seniors.
