Square Foot Ministries is readying for its major fund raiser, a yard sale, and annual “blitz’ build. The yard sale is planned for May 18-19 and the “blitz” build will take place June 2. Tax-deductible donations for the yard sale are being accepted now.

Throughout the year, Square Foot Ministry (SFM) works to improve the lives of residents in Fayette and surrounding counties. Most of the time, this is done through small home repairs. However, once each year, SFM does a “Blitz Build.” In less than two weeks, volunteers raise a house from the ground up for a family who otherwise would not be able to afford adequate housing.

This year’s project is a two-bedroom house for a single mother and her handicapped daughter in Griffin. The build will take place beginning June 2.

Through a generous donation, SFM obtained a suitable lot to build the house for this family. Most of the building materials will be obtained through donations from churches, businesses, and individuals.

Volunteers perform most of the labor for all home builds and repairs. SFM has no paid staff. All volunteer work is supervised by qualified professionals who work in the building industry and who donate their time. Specialty work, such as electrical, is contracted out to qualified professionals, many of whom offer their services at reduced rates.
Volunteers come from local churches and from organizations whose sole purpose is to improve the lives of others. Some of these other organizations include Turning Point and A Better Way Ministries.

To cover the cost of materials not donated, SFM accepts cash donations and conducts fund-raising activities, including the operation of the former Mission thrift store in Fayetteville. The major annual fund-raising activity is a yard sale.

This year’s yard sale will be held in the parking lot and Family Life Center of Fayetteville First United Methodist Church on Friday, May 18, and Saturday, May 19. To make donations of items for the yard sale, contact Judy Reynolds, 770-461-8529.
