McIntosh splits with Starr’s Mill boys and girls teams before regular season finale

The McIntosh boys tennis team defeated Starr’s Mill High School Tuesday night with a hard fought 4-1 victory. The Lady Chiefs had their first loss of the season at the hands of their tough region rival, 3-2.

On the boys side, captain Jonathon Emmet, a junior, and sophomore Matthew Thompson won their singles matches in straight sets at #2 and #3 respectively. Sophomore Austin Tilton and junior Davy Widtfeldt paired up at #1 doubles and won in a tiebreaker. Freshmen Femi Brinson and Stewart Weisheit also won their #2 doubles match securing the win.

Captain Will Truex, a senior, lost to Starr’s Mill’s stellar #1 singles player in straight sets. The Chiefs are 8-4 heading into the regional tournament in April.

For the girls, sophomore Marybeth Black was defeated in a close 7-6,7-5 battle at #1 singles. Freshman Chelsea Utting cruised to a win at #2 singles while junior Kendall Wilde lost in a close tiebreaker at #3 singles.

In doubles action, freshman Stephanie Halpern and sophomore Kelsey Paone won in a tiebreaker leaving a deciding match at #2 doubles. Senior captains Lyndsi Tufte and Emma Fisher won the first set tiebreaker but were defeated in the third set tiebreaker to give Starr’s Mill the victory. The Lady Chiefs are currently 14-1 for the season.

McIntosh rounded out their regular season playlast night against Fayette County.
