Few fans of the beautiful game could argue with the excellence of the 2007 high school soccer season, at least in this neck of the woods. With the boys and girls teams of McIntosh, Starr’s Mill and Whitewater all ranked in the top 10 joined by their region foes from Woodward Academy and the girls team from Northgate, it is clear that region 2-AAAA is the toughest region in the state. The results from the weekend only strengthen that argument.

McIntosh’s boys (11-0-2) are still ranked first in Class AAAA. The Chiefs defeated Chamblee, the team that knocked them out of the state playoffs last year, 3-1 and then defeated the fourth ranked Marist team 2-1. McIntosh played Blessed Trinity last night after the paper went to press and will take on the eighth ranked Woodward Academy team tomorrow.

The Lady Chiefs (7-5) lost 2-1 (6-5 in penalty kicks) to the second ranked Marsit team on Saturday. Devon Fischer scored for McIntosh and coach Marcia Clark stated that Kelsey Quinn and Kerri Reid played well in the midfield, while the defense was led by Tawny Moffatt, Chelsea Clements and Erin Pincombe. The Lady Chiefs will take on the top ranked Woodward team tomorrow. Woodward Academy defeated McIntosh in the state final last year.

Whitewater’s boys and girls faced Woodward last Friday and split. The girls (5-4-1), ranked fifth in AAAA, lost 1-0. It was their fourth loss in five games and all four were to teams ranked in the top 10 of their respective classifications.

The boys (5-3), ranked fifth in AAAA, won 2-1. Robbie Zeider scored the first goal for the Wildcats on an assist from Ryan Pugh, while Victor Murray scored the game winner off of a deflection. Coach Shane Pulliam stated that Jordan Cooper, Pugh, Zach Taylor, and Griffin Gainer all played well in the win.

Whitewater took on Shiloh last night after the paper went to press and will host Fayette County tomorrow.

Starr’s Mill was off last weekend but hosted Northgate last night after the paper went to press. The Lady Panthers (6-2-1) are ranked seventh and the boys team (7-1-3) is ranked third.

Fayette County played at Sandy Creek last night. The boys have a record of 6-3-1 and are 3-1 in the region, while the girls are 1-6 overall and 1-2 in the region.

Sandy Creek’s boys are 3-4-1overall and 2-4 in the region, while the Lady Patriots are 2-7 overall and 2-4 in the region.
