Debate, Anyone?

OK...so now the mayor, who had MANY opportunities prior to Election Day (proper) to debate and discuss the issues in candidate forums, letters to the editor, etc., wants to have ANOTHER debate. In fact, he "invited" Harold Logsdon to have it , according to the mayor's own words in the AJC Fayette section, "...at McIntosh High School. And let the government classes sponsor it."

Well, that seems a bit orchestrated, don't ya think? Why not have it at ANY high school (since there are two that serve PTC). And it's ironic that the government classes, who are REQUIRED to attend a public meeting (and most of them attend City Council meetings), schedule this debate for a time when a COUNCIL MEETING IS TO TAKE PLACE! Either we've got some dumb kids in Fayette County schools, or.....hmmm...perhaps someone TOLD them to do this? And now, suddenly, there's not a quorum for Council. I guess those important safety agreements, the certification of the election results and the progress of the flood map modernization can wait.

And when exactly was this debate to be publicized? I think I saw it for the first time in the Citizen online yesterday...I must have missed the plethora of handbills and radio ads promoting this epic battle. I'm guessing that the organizers barely had enough time to notify the opponents Smiling

As I was reading through the AJC Q&A with the mayor, a pronoun came to the forefront - "I".

Remember, if the mayor isn't reelected, the following things will just vanish:
- The mayor's intern program
- Teen Court (won't you be happy to hear that, teens! No more hugs and kisses for you, it's straight back to jail and fines for your parents when you smoke pot and speed!)
- Community Action Day (remember, it was all Steve...NO ONE ELSE HELPED HIM).

I don't know about you, but I know the perfect debate candidate for the mayor - it's available at Wal-Mart, Gilroy's and Home Depot....

A mirror.

Why is Harold Logsdon hiding from the high school students’ debate with Mayor Steve Brown? He says “there is no need for a debate”. Is that his view of democracy? During the general election with nearly a dozen candidates, it is impractical to have a one-on-one debate. We now have an opportunity to host a Mayor’s debate. But Mr. Logsdon refuses to show.

Most good, patriotic candidates willingly debate. The seminal debates in American history were between presidential candidates Stephen Douglas and Abraham Lincoln in 1860. Debates continued as the only medium in a non-radio and television America. In 1960, Nixon debated Kennedy, ignoring advice similar to what you would give Logsdon. Since 1976 (with Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter) the debates have become a tradition. No presidential candidate would dream of hiding from a debate. Great Americans debate; they offer the public discourse and debate. It reaffirms openness in government. That it is a government of the people, by the people and for the people.

As Mr. Logsdon has so aptly pointed out - at a debate he attended with the rest of the candidates, I believe - we are currently lacking in great leadership. And manipulating our teens, or our seniors, to orchestrate a debate that will ask only the questions you want hardly seems like democracy at its finest.

Just one resident, and patriot's, opinion.

Steve Joe Swanson Brown is desperate. You are 100% correct that he is trying to manipulate anyone and everyone he can to try to turn the tide, but it is much too late. The Logsdon Tsunami will wash Brown from office and cleanse city hall of the manipulating liar that occupies that office today.

Harold has nothing to gain and everything to lose by exposing himself to Brown in a "debate". The only people who are going to vote in the runoff are people who have been paying attention, trust me. And if you haven't arrived at a conclusion by now after all the public forums, essays, website, news articles, etc. as to whom is the better choice to lead us for the next four years, then you ought to stay home on December 6 and allow the informed to have a greater say.

Brown's other personalities, AKA Rex Kaigler, Fred Cowan, Caroline Fritz, etc. will resurface soon, so brace yourself for more psycho babble from the schizo mayor.

I read (or maybe just hallucinated) that debating was a great American tradition. So were duels. Can we have one....PLEASE?!?

I think it's comical that the best thing that can be said against someone who refuses a "loaded" debate after repeatedly providing his take on issues during the campaign is to imply he is un-American. I remember someone saying that a few years ago...what was his name....oh, yeah, MCCARTHY. And that just worked out so well for him.

I hope I speak for a large portion of the electorate when I proclaim - GIVE IT A REST. Stop trying to create conspiracies and problems when the simple issue is people just don't like Steve Brown's leadership style.

Oh - and how is openness in government when you have to cancel a regularly scheduled meeting of the council, the GREATEST opportunity for the public to learn and provide comment on current issues, so that someone can feed his campaign itch? That's open government? That's good government?

This isn't just a mayoral contest, it's life or death for all of humanity! Our patriotism(???) and great traditions (?????) are at stake.

What's next, a revelation by Brown and his army of kooks that PTC was actually built by DEVELOPERS? Call a press conference! When you deal with a crowd of people who are perpetually bitter about seemingly everything on the planet and firmly believe *the ends justify the means,* anything is possible. What a bunch of drama queens. They still don't realize that all the drama and hysterics are precisely why Brown has so much opposition.

Come on,it's hardly a run for the presidency. Brown has reached a level of desperation beyond even that of the Dukakis campaign. His letter to the editor has now called EVERY former mayor a crooked member of the "development community." One wonders how PTC got along without Brown? Truth is, there is no need for debate. Brown has lost. He is desperately trying to rally 60% of the voters to come out to vote for him. You know, "his people." They were so interested, that they didn't even show up for the election. Could he win? Sure. But only if those who oppose him fail to show up. His desperation, and apparent continued mental decline, is pathetically evident in his letter. Time for him to be a gracious loser and try and salvage some dignity. Logsden doesn't need to debate. And truthfully, no one is interested in this sham. We all voted last week. We will vote again on Dec. 6.
