All economists will agree that unemployment is the key measure that signals a depression. The US gov’t reported that full unemployment was at 7.2% at the end of 2008. The figure does not include discouraged workers who have dropped out of the work force or those working part-time because they can’t find full-time employment, temporary lay-offs or those working reduced hours. When those known figures are included, the full-time unemployment rate rises to 17.5%. And unemployment is rising in January 2009, not falling. Statistically, 25% unemployment was the figure during the 1930’s depression.

I came online after hearing what sherriff Hannah had done to Barry Babb in his first few days in office only to find that there was much more to the story than I had been told.

Not sure what the City Manager makes, but it's well over $120K---let's not forget he also hired an Assistant City Manager. Looks like a large pay cut is in order!! (Mr. McMullen, your wife still owes me $75 for ungiven swimming lessons.)

It's real funny how the only way I heard of this nonsense, was through a co-worker. Now, 4 or 5 years ago, every news station ran the story of Victor Hill in Clayton Co, and they are still running stories about him and his dealings. I know he actually fired people but he also demoted people which they sued him for being demoted.

this morning I told them I was waiting on a Government bailout. Those guys have no sense of humor whatsoever.

My GOD, we are taxed while sleeping, the electric, when we wash up, the water tax, when you buy food for your home, when you buy other goods for your home, when you go out to eat, owning a home, and so on, and so on and so on.

It seems these blogs are getting too mean spirited. Reading the blogs often makes your blood pressure boil and then many of us jump in here growling and foaming at the mouth. Then we get mad when someone shoots back a zinger that feels like it hit below the belt.

First of all, you people need to follow up on the law pertaining to constitutional officers (a Sheriff) and the powers that they have under law pertaining to employees.Congragulations Mr. Hannah and woe is me Mr. Babb. I did'nt vote for either one of you.Sheriff Hannah was elected by the people of this county and everyone will have a chance to vote/or not vote if he chooses to run again in the future. He was elected by the majority so I think he deserves a chance to see if his way of doing things works. MR. BABB, YOU GOT WHAT WAS COMING TO YOU. ALTHOUGH YOU MAY NOT LOOK IN THE MIRROR AND SEE IT YOURSELF, YOU GOT A LITTLE BIG FOR YOUR BRITCHES. TO SAY THE LEAST, ARROGANT!!!

I am a Cleveland Elementary parent. My heart goes out to Mr. Howe's coworkers in the building, as well as his family. I am sure that the principal was following instructions from the administrators at the Board of Education for something of this magnitude. It's called "chain of command". I appreciate the office trying to notify me before I turned on the evening news or received a phone call from a neighbor (or, heaven forbid - the automated phone message system the school uses). There are over 500 children in the school; taping was the quickest way, I'm sure, to make sure the letters went home today. I can't imagine even having to stuff that many envelopes, much less sealing them the traditional way. I hope that parents will take a deep breath and think things through before spreading anymore "trash talk" about the school.

William “Bill” Fowler pleaded guilty last week to charges of internet transmission of child pornography. The plea agreement includes a prison term of 9 years, a $27,000 fine, a life term of supervised probation after release, participation in mental health treatment, and prohibition of owning and operating a computer connected to the internet. Fowler was arrested in January 2007 at his home. He has spent the last 2 years in Federal Prison awaiting trial. While in prison he & his wife were divorced in October 2007.

I think we need to have more info before we pass judgment on such an outstanding teacher. I also have a child currently/formerly in his class.

Now that no one cares just how much money congress approves (borrows) and how much the Federal reserve issues in long term bonds, maybe it is the right time to blow enough cash to help solve the utter fiasco we have in our financial situation.

I keep reading in different publications about the development of new electric vehicles; how great they are going to be, how fast they are from 0-60 mph, and that they take only 2.5 hours top recharge their big lithium-ion batteries.

Everyone as a child has painstakingly tried to set up dominos, hoping and praying they will not be knocked down. On Thursday, December 15, the Mayor, City Council, and the City Manager will more than likely bump the table and the dominos will begin to fall.

When I was a kid, we had radio. We didn’t get our first TV until I was 10 or so... 1953-54. Programs didn't start until 12 noon, and ended at midnight. Then you could watch the test pattern Indian to see if he moved.

I was wondering if anyone had seen this movie yet and if so, is it really too violent to take kids to see? I heard that some of the scenes were really disturbing, like when one kid gets blinded by acid.
