Vacation over for local teams

Consider that tomorrow will be the beginning of a new year, a new century and to some, a new millennium. For high school athletic teams, it is the beginning of the second half of the season. Now they face more region opponents and every game counts a little bit more. Though the action won't begin until Tuesday, Jan. 4, one can foresee an exciting beginning to 2000.

Sandy Creek wrestlers will begin the new year with a match against Forest Park on Jan. 4. Three days later the team heads for a tournament in Florida. Starr's Mill's wrestling squad will face Henry County and Columbia in a dual meet on Tuesday, before heading out later in the week to the Hoover Invitational in Birmingham, Ala. Fayette County wrestles in a dual meet at East Coweta on Tuesday and McIntosh gets some extra rest before heading to the War Eagle Invitational at Woodward Academy next Friday and Saturday.

In basketball, McIntosh opens 2000 at home with a match against Lovejoy. The Lady Chiefs will take the court at 6 p.m. with the boys team playing immediately afterwards. McIntosh opens the year with four home games and then follows it with seven straight road games. Fayette County opens the month of January at home against Stockbridge. The girls play first at 6 p.m., with the boys game immediately following. The Tigers then play two on the road and two at home until the region tournament.

Starr's Mill opens up the second half of the season on the road. The Panthers will travel to Eagle's Landing on Tuesday for games beginning at 6 p.m. The Panthers have a mix of five games at home and seven games on the road, before hosting the sub-region tournament in February.
